Description of Work

This position is located at the Leland Bridge Maintenance Yard. The positions supervise Transportation Workers in work related to the operation and minor maintenance/preservation of movable span bridges. This is a working supervisor position in work related to but not limited to greasing, cleaning, preservation, minor mechanical repairs, replacement of grease lines and inspection of various drawbridge components. Oversee the daily operations, scheduling and facility up-keep of drawbridge control houses. May be required to work nights, weekends and holidays as well as respond to emergency callouts.
The recommended applicants must be able to maintain a close team environment or work independently as needed. Position is responsible for assisting management with the counsel and discipline of employees; monitoring expenditures; maintaining work records, time sheets, job reports, and inventory records; planning work operations and adjusting work assignments; training employees on-the-job; conducting performance reviews; assisting with interviewing and recommending new staff. Position is responsible for ensuring equipment is maintained and serviced as required. Position must routinely determine materials, techniques and tools to accomplish standard and non-standard work assignments.
This position is subject to emergency call back and will be required to work nights and weekends as needed for emergency and planned operations during adverse weather.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
Experience in bridge maintenance and repair, as well as, bridge maintenance equipment operation
Experience in record keeping, such as tracking employee and equipment time and recording quantities of materials used
Experience in planning work and supervising a bridge crew
Experience in Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety Policy and Practices
Experience inspecting bridges for minor maintenance needs
Additional Information:
Ability to supervise work crews and promote safe work environment. Ability to maintain working knowledge of all operating procedures and understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to maintain effective working relations with other employees and the general public. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate Class A CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions and have a Tanker (N) endorsement at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of the on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Steel toe safety shoes meeting ASTM F2413-05 are required within 30 days of employment.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and six years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience. Experience must be related to the functional area of the work that the position will supervise.
