Scope of Job
The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences ( SMSS ) at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley ( UTRGV ) invites applications for one postdoctoral position. Preference will be given to candidates working in areas of Mathematics that support our PhD program. Our PhD program has active researchers working in many areas. Pure Math: Combinatorics, Number Theory, and Algebra. Applied Math: Differential Equations, Numerical Analysis, and Data Science. Strong candidates from all backgrounds in mathematics will be given full consideration. Candidates should have received a PhD in mathematics, applied/computational mathematics, statistics, or related fields and should demonstrate excellent research potential and capacity for effective teaching. The emphasis of these positions is on research. The teaching load will be one to two courses per semester. The Postdoctoral Fellow is a Trainee position to pursue research as a vital component of their educational mission and professional career development. Works under minimal supervision with some latitude in the use of initiative and independent judgment in research and/or teaching. Performs teaching and/or research work as required within the classroom and/or project assigned.
About School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences ( SMSS ): The SMSS is part of the College of Sciences at UTRGV . With over 182 faculty and 4,000 undergraduate and graduate students, the College of Sciences takes pride in preparing students for diverse careers. SMSS faculty have active research programs in statistics, pure and applied mathematics, and mathematics education with over 40 tenure-track and tenured faculty. The school offers multiple graduate and undergraduate degrees in statistics and mathematics in addition to a PhD program in Mathematics and Statistics with Interdisciplinary Applications. Excellent opportunities exist for collaborations with colleagues in several colleges and departments across the university.
Description of Duties
The following is a listing of typical duties that may be applicable to the position:
Developing, testing, and analyzing research projects based on application expertise and interest.
Aiding in the development of a survey instrument, testing the instrument and disseminating the instrument.
Writing narrative summaries of the research results, and related tasks under the supervision of the faculty member assigned.
Conducting background research.
Developing and implementing an evaluation plan and preparing progress reports as needed.
Studying, testing, and maintaining accurate data identified as relevant and/or best practice systems from research results obtained through national studies.
Designing and implementing training activities as required.
Teaching one to two courses per semester in conjunction with faculty member,
if assigned; Publishing in peer-reviewed publications related to the focus of the research activities assigned; and performing other job-related duties as assigned.

Required Education
Applicants must have Ph.D. in Mathematics, Applied/Computational Mathematics, Statistics, or related fields from an accredited university, with at least 18 graduate hours in a mathematics content area.

Use of personal computer and proficiency in software and research statistical applications.
Working Conditions
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Office/research environment; some travel and weekend work is required. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley.
