Job Description
The CARE Center at NHCC provides personal counseling and programming related to student’s personal well-being and development. The Counselor will provide short-term counseling, crisis intervention, and referrals for students. The Counselor will work closely with the campus CARE team, serve on our Behavioral Intervention Team, and consult with faculty and staff regarding student issues and concerns. This position also provides programming related to mental health, wellness, and personal, non-academic support topics. This position also serves as the Parent Navigator on campus, serving the parenting-student population. The role will hold regular parenting-student support group meetings, create programming, produce newsletters and resources, and manage the parenting student spaces and all related grant funds and programs for this initiative.
Responsibilities:
Provide short-term counseling for North Hennepin Community College students and make appropriate referrals for students in need of more intensive mental health needs.
Maintain counseling records, adhering to professional standards and MN State policies.
Provide crisis intervention counseling, support and referrals, including working with the campus social worker, mental health therapists, and outside agencies.
Serve as a point of contact for parenting students by providing information on student support services and resources available to the students at the college, including: academic success strategies, basic needs programs (food insecurity, housing programs, parenting and child programs, transportation, employment or other resources).
Manage parenting student specific grant funds and program requirements, such as creating monthly programming, meeting individually with student parent cohort participants, and ensuring grant funds are spent towards the identified initiatives.
Work with the Title IX team to ensure compliance with and support of pregnant and parenting students.
Plan and conduct programs/outreach to different college community populations on personal and mental health and wellbeing.
Participate on the Behavioral Concerns and Response Team and conduct outreach to at-risk students.
Provide career counseling and career inventory interpretation based on referrals and partnership with the Career Center.
Participate in departmental and campus-wide discussions to enhance counseling, promote discourse and collaboration around the personal health or well-being of students, and advance the college mission.
Serve on college committees.
Demonstrated ability to work with students of color, Native students, students with disabilities, international students, and immigrant students.
Perform other job-related duties as assigned by Dean of Student Development.
Responsibilities:
The position will be hired with the expectations of working one evening per week (Tuesday or Wednesday to 6pm) during the academic year. We also work on an alternate calendar, with the counselors working year-round the 171 contracts days plus the 10-20 extra days (typically reduced days in summer).
Minimum Qualifications
Education Requirement
- Master's degree in counseling or counseling psychology.
Preferred Qualification
Licensure
Working knowledge of current student development and counseling theory
Working knowledge and understanding of mental health issues from a multi-cultural perspective
Experience working in an educational setting
One or more years of successful counseling experience, preferably in a college setting.
Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
