COLLEGE BACKGROUND: The State University of New York Maritime College is an undergraduate and graduate institution focused on engineering, business, science, and maritime transportation. SUNY Maritime College was founded in 1874 and holds the distinction of being the first and largest maritime school in the United States. The College proudly supports sixteen varsity sports teams and three club teams represented by five different athletic conferences. The College is located at historic Fort Schuyler in Throggs Neck, New York, just 14 miles from midtown Manhattan.

POSITION DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND COMPETENCIES:

  • Work with Waterfront Facilities Director to perform maintenance of the waterfront assets: boats (dinghy and keelboats, small - midsize powerboats), facilities (shops, bays, docks and moorings) and equipment (50-ton travel lift, forklift, boats, tools) as an exemplary marina/boat yard facility
  • Maintain up-to-date use, deficiency, and maintenance logs for all Waterfront assets
  • Support the growth of the Boat Donation Program by maintaining boats in good working order and preparing boats for sale
  • Support colleagues (waterfront and athletics staff, faculty, and outside users) in offering high-quality waterfront programs including collegiate courses, intercollegiate sailing and crew teams, waterfront student activities, hosting collegiate and high school regattas, sailing and powerboat courses, clinics, summer camps, and community programs
  • Train and mentor student assistants, sailing team members, volunteers, and interns in professional boat maintenance and operation
  • Continually raise the maintenance and operation standards of the Waterfront


Job Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Enthusiastic, positive, and hard-working team-player
  • Proven hands-on, boat or facility maintenance skills or eagerness to learn
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrate evidence of ability to work well with college-age student-athletes
  • Proven ability to perform administrative aspects of the program
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License. Must have a motor vehicle record free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations

Preferred Qualifications:

The ideal candidate, in addition to the above, will have:

  • Experience/expertise in racing sailboat rigging
  • Expertise/experience with marine engines/mechanical
  • Expertise/experience with fiberglass repair
  • Experience operating waterfront equipment including travel lift, crane, and forklift
  • US SAILING Basic Keelboat Instructor Certification
  • US SAILING/US POWERBOATING Sport Powerboat and Cruising Powerboat Instructor
  • USCG Master's License for Steam, Motor, and Auxiliary Sailing vessels of 50 Gross Registered Tons upon coastal waterways.
  • Competence in Microsoft Office: Word, Excel



Additional Information:

Classification/Salary Range: The Waterfront Assistant - Facilities a UUP position. The anticipated salary range for the position is $60,000.00 to $80,000.00 annually, with an outstanding benefits package. For more information please see Full-Time UUP Benefits Summary. Special Notes: This is a full-time calendar year temporary appointment UUP Position. Fair Labor Standard Acts (FLSA) Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously.
