Student Psychological Counselor

POSITION DETAILS

The full-time Student Psychological Counselor assists in the clinical, administrative, training, and outreach activities of the Counseling and Resources for Emergency Support (CARES) Office of Personal Counseling (OPC) at Bronx Community College, functioning as a primary provider of direct clinical services. The Student Psychological Counselor assists with providing walk-in, crisis counseling and triage. The Psychological Counselor will work with college students who are experiencing emotion/psychological crisis, trauma and anxiety from educational and life stressors. The Student Psychological Counselor will report to the Director of BCC CARES. In addition to the CUNY title overview duties, tasks include but are not limited to:

· Complete walk-in screenings, intakes, and assessments for incoming and crisis students.

· Provide short-term individual and group counseling for students.

· Assess multiple emergency walk-in students and triage for safety evaluations.

· Provide consultation services for faculty, staff, and public safety officers on trauma and crisis intervention.

· Plan, develop, coordinate, and present educational programs and outreach as necessary.

· Provide support with and connection to community resources.

· As part of the larger CARES team support students and colleagues with non-academic services in the area as needed.

· Participate actively in outreach initiatives

· Provide evening coverage one evening per week.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

A Doctoral degree in Psychology to include Ph.D. and Psy.D. programs is preferred or a master's degree in an appropriate discipline for personal or psychological counseling is required.

A New York State License as a mental health practitioner (social work, psychology, or mental health counseling) is also required.

Experience:

Five+ years of related experience in social work, psychology, or mental health counseling. To meet the supervised experience requirement as a licensed Mental Health Counselor, you must have completed at least 3,000 clock hours providing Mental Health Counseling. The supervised experience must be obtained after completion of the master’s degree program required for licensure.

This position is required to work one evening a week during late hours.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience providing psychological counseling to individuals and groups

  • Experience with diverse populations and competence in multicultural issues and their relation to counseling undergraduate and graduate students

  • Knowledge and experience with time-limited, solution focused therapy, and coping skills development

  • Experience with and openness to therapeutic case management

  • Experience dealing with issues related to academic success and completion

  • Competence in crisis intervention, suicide prevention, assessment of need for hospitalization, handling emergencies and hospitalizations

  • Ability to work well both independently and collaboratively in a diverse and rapid-paced academic environment.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills

  • Knowledge of Windows based programs and other computer programs. The ability to communicate in writing is an important job-related competency. All candidates will draft a writing sample as part of the interview process to demonstrate their ability to write progress notes, memos and letters that are grammatically correct and express information clearly.
