New York Botanical Garden Coordinator, Humanities Institute (Part-time) in Bronx, New York

Position Summary:

The Humanities Institute at the New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) is seeking a part-time coordinator for the NYBG Herbarium + Community Gardens Initiative funded by the Humanities of New York Action Grant who will report to the Director of the Humanities Institute. The NYBG Herbarium + Community Gardens Initiative is a community-led collaboration between NYBG staff in the Humanities Institute, William and Lynda Steere Herbarium, and Bronx Green-Up program and community partners dedicated to amplifying community access to scientific resources and supporting projects and dialogue surrounding plants and ecologies in New York City communities. The coordinator will be critical to the success of at least 5 events held in collaboration with community partners in the fall, winter, and possibly spring as part of the Humanities of New York Action Grant, and will have the opportunity to help guide and shape the direction of the Initiative. The coordinator will provide structure for meetings, help build relationships between NYBG staff and community partners, manage communications for the Initiative, collaborate with community partners to coordinate events, evaluate, document and report on the events as part of the grant, and generally help maintain a collaborative and community-led approach to the Initiative activities.

Additionally, this position supports, through actions and conduct, NYBG’s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility initiatives and helps to build and maintain an inclusive organization culture throughout the institution.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

· Run bi-monthly community meetings

· Prepare and distribute monthly newsletter

· Coordinate and lead event planning, conduct an evaluation of the events

· Prepare reports for Humanities New York

· Maintain the Initiative contact list, and take detailed meeting notes,

· Communicate with NYBG stakeholders and partner collaborators regularly

· Respond to any questions and concerns raised by community partners in a prompt manner

Qualifications:

· Strong interpersonal skills,

· Excellent written and verbal communication, time management and organization

· Ability to work independently and in collaboration with partners within and outside of NYBG

· Ideal candidates will be interested in biocultural / ethnobotanical topics and interested in supporting and creating opportunities for to promote people-plant relationships and the reservation and sharing of cultural plant knowledge, particularly in collaboration with environmental justice communities in New York City.

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this position, the coordinator is required to, sit for extended periods. The coordinator will also need to travel occasionally to various locations in the Bronx and uptown Manhattan and will need to be prepared to spend a few hours, at a time, outdoors, where conditions will vary.

Baseline Work Schedule:

22 hours per month on average (schedule is flexible and will vary by month)

The position is hybrid (work from home, office, and in the field), with the greater balance in the office or in the field. About 70-80% of the work hours computer-based and the rest of the time spent in partner locations in the Bronx and uptown Manhattan, such as community gardens.

The position requires limited weekend work, including at least four pre-scheduled events on the following Saturdays: September 21, September 28, October 26, November 9.

Pay rate: $35/hour
