The program model is based on three pillars of support: Counseling, Academic and Financial. Rooted in social justice, SEEK is designed to provide access, opportunity and success; breaking generational cycles of poverty through increased education, social capitol and career development.

The SEEK Counselor is a hybrid position in which the individual will offer counseling and academic advisement. The successful candidates must be able to provide a range of student support services including personal, academic, and career counseling to a multiculturally diverse population of students. We are looking for individuals who want to collaborate with a dynamic staff within a team-oriented and student-centered approach. The individuals will be expected to work 35 hours per week.

Other duties of the counselors include, but are not limited to:

· Manage, through individual and group counseling and related activities, the support service needs of a caseload of approximately 150 students.

·Teach the departmental sections of our college readiness course, First Year Seminar, during the fall and spring semesters.

· Assist students with program planning, advising and registration using various technology platforms (e.g., CUNYFirst, Schedule Builder, Degree Works, EAB Navigate) .

· Monitor students' academic performance and progress.

· Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of student contacts.

· Contribute to a myriad of initiatives focused on academic intervention, counseling support, psychoeducation, and program marketing.

· Facilitate information sessions for new students, teach multiple sessions of our Summer Immersion Program workshops and other pre-freshman activities such as CUNY- wide Welcome Day.

· Collaborate with other student services offices on and off campus to deliver programs that will enhance the educational experience of SEEK students (e.g. career services, study abroad, scholarships, urban males, writing center, etc.).

· Engage in scholarly research and publication.

· Serve on departmental, college, and CUNY-wide committees.

· Assume other related duties assigned by the SEEK Director.

QUALIFICATIONS

A Master's degree in counseling, social work, or psychology and two years' related experience. Other related master’s degrees can be considered.

Experience in college transition/college success for first generation college students.

Note: this is not a mental health counselor/practitioner position and is not responsible for providing psychological counseling.

Provides educational programs, academic advice, and assistance to SEEK students. SEEK (Search for Education, Elevation, and Knowledge) is a higher education opportunity program established at the senior CUNY colleges to provide comprehensive academic support to assist capable students who otherwise might not be able to attend college.

  • Provides advice to students covering academic, social, career, and related issues, making appropriate referrals as needed

  • Determines areas of need and develops and teaches orientation programs, seminars, student workshops, and other activities

  • Develops academic interventions related to student academic status and success

  • Reports on activities and outcomes, assisting with report-writing and data collection

  • Collaborates with academic and student support departments to ensure students are utilizing available services and programming

  • Performs related duties as assigned.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Salary commensurate with education and experience, $70,238.
