Job Summary

The purpose of this role is to support Messer operations and businesses across the Americas, including the United States, Canada, Colombia, Brazil, and Chile, by implementing environmental plans, processes, programs, and standards to ensure compliance with applicable environmental laws and regulations; and by providing environmental expertise, coaching and training to ensure Messer's employees understanding and compliance with Messer standards and federal, state and local regulatory requirements.

This supporting role will expand the environmental team's bandwidth thereby allowing the team to further self-perform potentially reducing the use of consultants and related costs; and to increase site's reviews, evaluations and audits to better identify compliance gaps and address those gaps.

The role is critical in ensuring Messer operations are in, and maintain compliance with, all applicable federal, state, and local regulatory requirements in a pro-active manner thereby contributing to Messer achieving its 100% environmental compliance goal; and demonstrating Messer's positive environmental stewardship with the regulatory agencies and local communities within which it operates.

Principal Responsibilities

* Supports Messer sites with environmental permitting matters, including review of permit applications and related documents such as SWPPPs, SPCC plans, etc.; and responding to site inquiries on environmental issues and advising on course of action.

* Supports investigations related to environmental related incidents, including root cause analysis and development of corrective actions.

* Conducts visits to sites to evaluate environmental permitting and regulatory compliance; identify gaps; and develop corrective actions.

* Manages pesticides FIFRA and CA DPR reporting and any additional reporting that may arise. Supports sales team with related inquiries.

* Manages Spill Center (except invoicing which is managed by the DIST team), including supporting related investigations as needed.

* Develop list of spills and releases reporting guidelines per state.

* Supports sites with their Tier 2 and TRI submittals; and other submittals as needed.

* Supports environmental components of various internal and external audits.

* Maintains working knowledge of all environmental regulations in the US and Canada.

* Supports implementation of enhanced waste management practices including updated procedures, forms, and related waste management plans and training.

* Addresses non-ESG air emissions related questions, permitting, etc., including the EPA GHG reporting process whenever applicable.

* Supports implementation of Environmental Management System (including ISO 14001) related procedures and chapters.

* Participates in the development and delivery of environmental related training.

* Tracks and compiles environmental sustainability metrics, such as water consumption, refrigerants emissions, vehicle mileage, and others as applicable or requested.

Promotes a Culture of environmental compliance and a commitment to environmental leadership by providing local facilitation, consultation, training, and support for local management teams.

Required Skills

Demonstrated knowledge of environmental regulations related to air, water (including wastewater and stormwater), hazardous materials, RCRA, etc.

* Experience with water and air treatment technologies and practices.

* Experience working with regulatory agencies.

* Experience with environmental auditing.

* General knowledge of environmental sustainability matters, including metrics and scopes

* Ability and discipline to work independently.

* Negotiation and communications skills.

* Ability to work with others at various organizational levels.

* Customer focused.

* Embracing and Leading Change

* Must have excellent writing skills.

Computer savvy.

Qualifications

Environmental, Chemical, Civil Engineer; or Environmental, Chemical Scientist or Specialist University/College BS Degree; MS Degree a plus

* 5 to 10 years of experience

* US Federal and state environmental compliance and permitting experience (Air, Water, RCRA, SPCC, UST, etc.); similar Canadian experience a plus

* Experience with ISO 14001 a plus

*Ability to travel 50% to 75%
