DESCRIPTION OF WORK In this role, you will operate a Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) workstation to transform survey data into foundational maps essential for the creation and preparation of highway or bridge plans. You will support the interpretation of highway plans to facilitate the staking of construction projects. Your responsibilities will include setting up, operating, adjusting, and maintaining various survey instruments, as well as establishing centerlines, measuring angles, and verifying the alignment of structures. You will stake out tangents, curve stations, and reference control points, while also utilizing a level to secure ground elevations, establish benchmarks, and determine road grades. Proficiency in operating theodolites, electronic distance measuring devices, electronic total stations, electronic data collectors, portable computers, and telecommunications equipment will be required.
Additionally, you will assist in employing a range of Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers and methodologies to pinpoint mapping and survey-grade locations. Your role will involve performing trigonometric and algebraic calculations, preparing field sketches and notes, and reviewing the work of colleagues for accuracy. You will engage in various survey team functions, including operating automatic levels, transits, data collectors, electronic total stations, prisms, and serving as a chain person or rod person, utilizing both conventional and electronic equipment. Field decision-making regarding the placement and documentation of traverse and topography points will also be part of your duties. Effective communication with team members through verbal instructions, hand signals, and radio will be essential as you operate both electronic and conventional instruments to ascertain elevation, location, and distances within the designated survey area.
Moreover, you will assist in the electronic downloading and editing of survey data using the Department of Transportation's CADD system. You will learn to troubleshoot both manual and electronic records to ensure they are neat, complete, accurate, and formatted appropriately for engineering and property surveys. Your responsibilities will also include recording survey data through data collection processes.
Work Schedule and Additional Information:
Full-time employment, vendor controlled schedule Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch. Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time on an ad-hoc basis. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Bridgeville. Salary:In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
One year of experience in highway or bridge surveying, design, construction, or inspection work; or One year of experience in quality control of materials or building or construction industry experience, which includes reading and interpreting blueprint , plans, or schematics; or An equivalent combination of experience and training.
