Job Summary and Qualifications

GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

The GME Group Vice President provides executive-level leadership for HCA Group, Division, and related HCA GME affiliated operations and management teams to ensure all graduate medical education strategic and operational goals are achieved. The position oversees the responsibilities of a large and complex organization that includes multiple Divisions, GME sponsoring institutions, programs, and teaching hospitals, up to 4,000 residents, 5,000+ faculty in 250+ graduate medical education programs, and on average 100 staff members, with an operating budget of more than $500 million annually.

Supports and supervises up to seven GME Division Vice Presidents and additional administrative staff titles. Builds trust through effective communication and collaboration. Works to develop a performance-oriented culture based on mutual respect and accountability. Maintains appropriate balance between accomplishing tasks and building strong working relationships. Works closely with other HCA leaders to assure alignment of GME with organizational objectives.

May be assigned key GME leadership roles in the event of acquisitions, partnerships, mergers, or divestitures involving teaching hospitals. Assumes Division Vice President duties and responsibilities in the event of vacancies among the Division Vice Presidents in the Group.

Reports To: President of Graduate Medical Education (GME)

DUTIES INCLUDE BUT NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Provides leadership and strategic direction to assigned divisions to ensure that GME operational and business plans closely align with the HCA GME goals and objectives

  • Drives strategic initiatives that target program growth, program improvement, quality and financial performances as core operational imperatives of the organization

  • Builds a success – oriented performance culture that drives continuous improvement in the core components of the business

  • Interfaces well and drives solutions with support departments such as HR, Legal, Compliance, Quality, etc.

  • In collaboration with Division Vice Presidents, program directors, residents and fellows, develops and continuously improves upon an optimal learning environment for all GME programs at the Group level.

  • Develops and demonstrates clear understanding of company strategy regarding the integration of GME with clinical services

  • Articulates physician workforce needs and requirements at the Group level

  • Supports Division Vice Presidents in creation and advancement of the GME Development Plan to meet financial, quality, and physician workforce needs

  • Supports and enhances application of enterprise-wide GME strategy, such as standard curricula, coordinated block schedules, attribution-based resident evaluation, and medical education research

  • Develops effective resident recruitment strategies working with Division and Program leaders

  • Anticipates, recognizes, and adapts to changes in the clinical, accreditation, and financial environment for GME

  • Recognizes opportunities for partnerships with medical schools and other academic organizations that may enhance the quality and reputation of HCA GME programs

  • Supports Division and program leaders in the recruitment, selection, and development of high quality program leaders and faculty

  • Works effectively with HCA leaders, CSG recruiting team, Physician and Provider Relations, and physician contracting leaders, to ensure support of medical staff needs through the GME programs

  • Demonstrates knowledge of the strategy of competing organizations in the Group markets, with specific detailed knowledge of competitor GME strategy and programs Finance

  • In collaboration with the GME finance team and Division leadership, has broad oversight for the GME financial operations at the Group level.

  • Demonstrates expert level GME reimbursement and regulatory knowledge and application to HCA GME strategy and program development at the Group level.

  • Provides oversight of physician employment and professional services contracts in accordance with management expectations while insuring compliance with all applicable regulatory authorities and HCA policies

  • Actively participates as part of the GME senior leadership team to address planning, budgets, new products and services, compliance, and other GME and physician needs

  • Assures resources are provided to meet the needs of the GME programs in the Group and effectively manages same Growth

  • Works with group, division, and hospital leadership to develop and implement growth strategies

  • Effectively executes GME Development and financial growth plans Quality

  • Develops, documents and communicates quality standards and goals for all GME programs in the Region

  • Develops and maintains a culture of improvement

  • Demonstrates expert level knowledge of ACGME accreditation requirements

  • Working in collaboration with Division Vice Presidents, Program Directors, and Designated Institutional Officials, assures initial and continued accreditation for all GME programs in the Region

  • Maintains Board pass rate equal or greater than the national average by specialty for all GME programs in the Group

  • Actively supports enterprise initiatives to improve the quality and reputation of HCA GME People

  • Recruits, retains, and manages Division VPs and other team members as needed to execute our strategies

  • Builds trust and acts with authenticity to cultivate a culture of integrity, inclusion, and mutual respect

  • A visible point of contact for Group and Division leadership, developing and maintaining positive and productive relationships

  • Delivers information in a clear, concise and compelling manner to effectively engage others and achieve results

  • Develops and strengthens collaborative relationships with both internal and external stakeholders to advance the growth and improvement of our residency programs

  • Creates Group-wide program leadership and residency advisory committee so that the Group VP can be closely connected to and informed about the needs of the Divisions in the Group

  • Leads others to accomplish organizational goals and objectives; provides meaningful coaching and mentoring to increase the capabilities of individuals and teams and drive employee engagement

  • Actively participates in and provides executive-level support for Group and Division recruitment and retention activities

  • Conducts performance evaluations and, if needed, corrective disciplinary action with staff

  • Promoting consistent positive resident and program leader interactions that advance the agenda of program improvement and improvement of patient satisfaction

  • Practicing and adhering to the “Code of Conduct” philosophy and “Mission and Value Statement”

  • Displaying consistent behavior that enhances the public image of the organization as evidenced by professionalism in interactions with peers, subordinates, customers, (patients, families, physicians, payers, vendors, etc.)

  • Performs other duties as assigned

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor’s degree Health, Business Administration, or a related field required

  • Advanced degree required

  • Doctorate or terminal degree strongly preferred. MD, PhD, DO, JD, etc.

EXPERIENCE:

  • 15 years of experience in senior healthcare management positions, required

  • 15 years of experience in managing direct reports across a wide geographic area or multi-hospital system, required

  • 7+ years of experience in graduate medical education, required
