MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Four years of experience in automotive repair work;or
Vocational/technical training in automotive repair can substitute at the rate of 720 classroom hours for a maximum of one year of the required experience.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
The incumbent of this position is subject to pre-employment, post-accident, random and reasonable suspicion drug and alcohol testing, and the Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse query requirements of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations, Title 49, Part 382, CFR.
Successful completion of a drug test is a condition of employment in the position in accordance with Section 112.0455 F.S. “Drug Test” means any chemical, biological or physical instrumental analysis administered for the purpose of determining the presence or absence of a drug or its metabolites.
The incumbent must obtain a Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) within six (6) months of appointment. The Florida Forest Service will cover the majority of the cost associated with attaining the required CDL training and the initial CDL test when administered at an agency authorized CDL training center.
Successful applicant will be subject to pre-employment and annual queries through the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.
Occasional to moderate travel required.
Position may respond to emergencies, including natural disasters or other type incidents requiring travel, as needed.
NOTES:
Successful applicant with a current Commercial Driver’s License must pass a query of the Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.
JOB DUTIES:
Responsible for directing the overall equipment maintenance and repair program within a district or forestry center of the Florida Forest Service, and for supporting the statewide maintenance and repair of equipment for the Division by planning, organizing, prioritizing and assigning work to supervised employees. Inspect, maintain, repair, fabricate, modify, cannibalize, test, assess and recommend for acquisition, disposal or continued operation the units of automotive, agricultural, firefighting, emergency response and heavy construction equipment assigned to a DOF field unit. Items of equipment likely to be included are: gasoline and diesel vans, sedans, pickup trucks, transport trucks, school buses, bucket trucks, other medium and heavy trucks; light, medium and heavy dozers and other tracked equipment; front-end loaders, dump trucks, excavators, scrapers and road graders; light, medium and heavy cranes; pile drivers; farm tractors, agricultural implements and tree shakers. Formulates policies and procedures pertaining to accounting for and movement of parts, materials, fuels and lubricant inventories at the local level, provides budget information to center/district manager on shop operation costs, equipment repair and operating costs, fuel costs, cost of materials and supplies for fabrications, etc. Assists Operations/Maintenance Administrator with statewide development and implementation of policies, procedures and standards for equipment operations and maintenance and scoping of equipment research and development plans.
Responsible and accountable for managing budget/dollars/resources (staff, vehicles, computers, cell phones, etc.) of any assigned programs in an efficient and accountable manner.
Responsible for ensuring that assigned program areas have operational procedures and processes which result in accountability and compliance with Division and Department policies and procedures.
Interface with intra-district supervisory personnel (center/district manager, forest area supervisors, program administrators, etc.) to discuss costs, priority changes and status of major equipment repairs and overhauls (out-of-body engine work, transmission rebuilds, heavy equipment tear-downs, etc.)
Consultation with mechanics on diagnosis of major component problems, planning of major tear-downs/overhauls, assessment of recurring operating problems and assessment of conditions affecting operating safety.
Management of equipment repair shop operations, including oversight of parts, materials, supplies, fuels and lubricants purchasing, inventory, record keeping, reporting and security; oversight of welding and fabrication; vehicle equipment safety inspections; processing of equipment records; parts/component sourcing, price comparisons, continual audit of shop operations for compliance with Department procedures, environmental requirements, optimum shop safety and maximum economy and efficiency of operations.
Interface with operation/maintenance administrators and other automotive equipment maintenance superintendents to formulate statewide policies and procedures for equipment maintenance and operations, consult on specifications for new equipment purchases, equipment repair training, cost accounting and record keeping and equipment research and development needs.
Interface with inter- and intra-district personnel, fire resource manager and property administrator in acquisition, disposal modification, cannibalization and sourcing of parts, components and repair/operating manuals for federal excess equipment.
Oversight of tools and repair equipment enforcement of security and housekeeping, management of compressed air, lubrication, fuel station, steam cleaning, parts washing and other systems and concerns ancillary to operation of a major equipment repair shop.
Planning and presentation of training sessions, presentations at employee meetings and other work as required. Also responds to emergency calls as requested.
