Position Details

General Statement

The Sr. Coordinator of Fitness will provide leadership and expertise in the fitness program within Campus Recreation. Areas of oversight include group fitness, and personal training. Responsible for hands-on operations including personnel training and supervision, customer service, fitness program equipment operations and maintenance, delivery of programs and services, staff/student development and training, safety and risk management. The qualified candidate will be required to work Monday-Friday and occasional nights and weekends.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide supervision for day-to-day operation of group fitness and personal training programs.

  • Recommends and implements strategy and practices for program development and enhancement to include revenue generation strategy, client/participant recruitment and retention, staff recruitment and retention methods.

  • Staff supervision includes hiring, training, scheduling, feedback, evaluation, and payroll processes for group fitness instructors and personal trainers to include student staff and part time contractors.

  • Leadership and supervision of student employees graduate assistants.

  • Provide on-going education and support for supervised staff members through regular trainings and in-services.

  • Coordinate and teach group fitness instructor and personal trainer certification courses.

  • Assist with the annual budget submission and purchasing for fitness program areas.

  • Under the guidance of Associate Director Programs and department marketing staff, implement publicity strategies to maximize program participation.

  • Ensure the highest possible level of customer service to provide exceptional experiences.

  • Implement program assessment tools to assess program needs, participant satisfaction and overall program feedback.

  • Inventory, maintenance and troubleshooting of all equipment and supplies related to program to ensure quality, safety, and security.

  • Provide ongoing program updates including participation, assessment data, and financial status.

  • Collaborate and assist with Activity Classes for Credit ( ACT ) as needed, maintain close network with Health and Human Development academic partners.

  • Establish and maintain systems and processes to mitigate risk.

  • Respond to the requests from students, patrons, and employees for programs and services in related areas.

  • Coordinate and maintain healthy working relationships with multiple university departments and organizations.

  • Collaborates on overall health and wellness programming. Create and maintain inter-disciplinary programming and patient/client centered, holistic approach to wellness and fitness in collaboration with Student Wellness colleagues.

  • Perform personal training and/or teach group fitness classes on occasion.

  • Other duties as assigned.

    Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in exercise science, kinesiology, recreation, health promotion, education, sports management or a related field.

  • Current certification in CPR , AED and first aid or the ability to obtain within six months of hire.

  • NCCA Accredited fitness certification.

    Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Master’s degree in exercise science, kinesiology, health promotion, higher education, sports management, or a related field.

  • Demonstrated supervision experience, including the development of student staff.

  • Professional level experience with fitness programming and development.

  • General knowledge of the allied health care continuum, and ability to advocate for fitness/wellness as part of the student health care continuum.

  • Professional involvement in organizations like the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association ( NIRSA ).

  • Ability to work variable schedule which may include early mornings or evenings, as well as weekends and nights, and the ability to attend on and off campus events.

  • Ability to teach a wide variety of fitness formats and work with clients with diverse needs.

  • Must hold a current CPR / AED certification at the time of appointment.
