Position Details

General Statement

Montana State University Counseling and Psychological Services ( CPS ) is seeking to fill a senior staff counselor position to provide multiculturally attuned services to students, faculty, and staff of the university.

CPS is part of Student Wellness at MSU and works closely with partners in Student Health Services, Health Advancement, and Campus Recreation. Each of these departments is now located in the new Student Wellness Center to enhance services for whole person student health and well-being in one facility.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provision of multi-culturally sensitive psychotherapy.

  • Provision of intakes, individual, and group counseling.

  • Crisis intervention.

  • Outreach and consultation to the campus community.

  • Development of a specific area of specialized clinical interest relevant to a college counseling setting.

  • Participation in agency meetings and projects.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Master’s degree in mental health counseling, clinical or counseling psychology, or social work.

  • Credentialed as an PCLC or SWLC in Montana (post-degree supervision will be provided by licensed CPS staff members) and independently licensed by January 1, 2026).

  • Demonstrated clinical experience working with adults including crisis assessment and intervention.

  • Demonstrated experience working clinically with people from various backgrounds and beliefs.

    Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Licensed as a LCSW or LCPC in Montana.

  • Experience working in a university counseling center and/or demonstrated potential for the variety of tasks required.

  • Experience providing outreach and consultation services on a university campus.

  • Clinical experience working with crisis intervention and risk assessment, and safety planning.

  • Area of specialized interest or expertise such as: substance abuse, group therapy, working with a specialized population, treatment of neurodivergent students, or other area of specialty.

  • Experience working on an integrated, multidisciplinary team.

  • Possess excellent written and oral communication skills; have the ability to work effectively with people of many backgrounds.

  • Possess the ability to be flexible and respond quickly to urgent needs that arise from the campus community.

  • Demonstrate the capacity to work autonomously and also engage in collaborative team efforts.

  • Have the ability to complete documentation in a timely manner in accordance with agency policies and ethical standards.

  • Maintain confidentiality of records and information.

  • Have the ability to use computer programs (including an electronic health record) to complete job duties and assist in agency functioning.

CPS is seeking to fill two vacancies, of which, one will begin Spring 2025 and the other in Summer 2025. Start dates outside of these time frames may be negotiable.

The position is full-time for 10 months (August – May). Summer (June and July) FTE is negotiable up to 0.5 FTE .
