State of Massachusetts Nurse Manager in Bourne, Massachusetts

This position is Monday-Friday, Day Shift with occasional weekends and holidays. * *Position Summary: The Nurse Manager is responsible for the supervision of the nursing staff and managing the daily operations of the nursing team and department. The Nurse Manager ensures compliance with regulations, accreditation standards and current standards of nursing care. Supervision Received: This position receives direct supervision from the Health Services Administrator in performing duties in accordance with best practices and current standards of nursing care. Duties and Responsibilities:* * Ensures that goals, objectives and work performed are consistent with standards and that quality care is provided to inmates.* Provides clinical guidance to nursing staff. Participates in the selection process for hiring. Works to develop, educate and motivate staff. Conducts performance evaluations. Monitors the quality of documentation, records, patient communication and patient education and other information concerning services and care. Assigns and oversees the work of the nursing staff in collaboration with the Charge Nurses. Works with the H.S.A. to ensure resources are available to provide quality services. Participates in the development of policies and procedures to ensure efficient and effective delivery of services. Participates in the development of long-range plans for health care programs. Acts as a liaison with other units, agencies and outside organizations. Prepares reports and correspondence as needed. Responds to psychiatric or medical emergencies. Provides direct care and medication administration to patients as needed. Ensures treatments, medications and diagnostic testing is completed according to physician orders in accordance with identified medical needs and current practice standards initially and ongoing. Works with nursing staff to develop and modify plans of care for patients/inmates. Ensure inmates receive ongoing teaching regarding their medical conditions, diagnosis, management of such and prevention of complications and healthy life strategies. Assists the Admin Assistant with scheduling to ensure adequate nursing coverage for shift. Communicates with the H.S.A. ongoing as to the status of care, nursing staff, mental health staff, other providers and Shift Supervisors to ensure medications, medical testing and treatments, all required and needed assessments are completed and timely. Provide on-call staff support for urgent issues after hours. Ensures all staff follow policies and procedures as outlined by BCSO within the scope of their license. Assist the Administration with cost effective ways to provide quality medical care to the population at Barnstable County Correctional Facility. Assist to coordinate care for inmates that are hospitalized in the community or Lemuel Shattuck Hospital and upon return. Participate on pertinent organizational committees including but not limited to Pharmacy, Infection Prevention, Policy and Procedure and Continuous Quality Improvement. Actively participates in and assists in preparation for Dept of Corrections, American Correctional Association and any other auditing or credentialing procedures. Ensures specialty care is provided: optometry, dental, ophthalmology, gynecological/obstetric care, etc. Reports medical or care issues to H.S.A. in a timely fashion. Orients, supports and evaluates clinical staff to meet the needs of the health services of the inmates. Recommends health service positions, job description tasks and FTE’s to the H.S.A. in order to meet those needs. Assists with development, implementation and adherence to budgetary concerns promoting cost effective initiatives. Participates on pertinent organizational committees including but not limited to Pharmacy, Infection Prevention, Policy and Procedure and Continuous Quality Improvement. Provides reporting on quality initiatives through auditing processes with key indicators as established ongoing with the CQI process. Ensures ordered referrals for specialized medical services are completed and assists with scheduling consults for medical assessments and treatments not provided within the facility as needed in collaboration with the Medical Assistant. Completes documentation as required by facility and medical standards. Ensures routine Sick Call requests are addressed timely and in accordance with standards of care. Strong knowledge of medical scheduling practices and procedures. Ability to prioritize and problem solve in a high-pressure environment. Ability to exercise discretion and good judgement and to handle confidential information. Ability to maintain all certifications as necessary. Ability to attend necessary training courses as required. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Nursing or related area of study is required. Current and valid Massachusetts Registered Nursing license. A minimum of four (4) years of experience as a Registered Professional Nurse is required. Correctional Nursing experience preferred. A minimum of two (2) years of supervisory experience preferred. Certification in CPR is required.
