Job Summary

The Upward Bound Program (UB) at the University of Colorado Boulder is seeking a full-time Assistant Director! This role involves significant travel to both in-state and out-of-state target high schools, along with a variety of key responsibilities. These include curriculum development, mentoring and counseling students, supervising residential staff, and managing student life on campus. Additionally, the Assistant Director will organize and schedule student activities, track program graduates, and plan and conduct training workshops for both residential staff and site coordinators. The role also entails assisting with student records and ensuring compliance with university and federal regulations. Effective communication and coordination between the UB program, housing staff, and other university departments are crucial.

Most travel for this position occurs during the academic year. To meet UB grant requirements, the Assistant Director and Director must visit all twelve CUUB partner high schools across a five-state region twice per semester. During this time, the Assistant Director is responsible for maintaining the CUUB website, tracking and logging student services via Blumen software, and monitoring outreach and learning platforms such as OnTrack and IXL for e-learning modules. Attendance at professional development trainings-covering DOE topics and broader higher education trends-is also required. Furthermore, the Assistant Director will research effective strategies for staff onboarding and grant service implementation. The academic year provides an opportunity to reflect on and improve the program, as well as to prepare for the upcoming summer program, which includes updating employee handbooks in line with federal and university child protection guidelines. Meanwhile, the delivery of all grant-funded student services must continue smoothly.

The summer program is a seven-week intensive commitment requiring flexibility in hours. Upward Bound plays a crucial role in helping participants-high school students from low-income families or those who are first-generation college-bound-prepare for college. The Assistant Director will supervise a team of residential staff, which typically consists of one resident supervisor and eight resident advisers, ensuring the safety and well-being of all participants. Additionally, they will work closely with the Director to maintain academic excellence and prioritize student safety and wellness.

Upward Bound's mission is to foster a college-going culture within the communities it serves, helping to increase the number of students who enroll in and graduate from postsecondary institutions. In alignment with this mission, the Assistant Director will work closely with the Director to strategize for external scholarships that support Upward Bound participants and alumni in attending the postsecondary institution of their choice. This may involve working with external Indigenous scholarship providers to coordinate fundraising, outreach, and related duties, such as researching and liaising with potential scholarship donors and hosting donor/scholar events. Additionally, the Assistant Director will collaborate with campus units, particularly the Student Support Services (SSS) program, to ensure a smooth transition for UB alumni who choose CU Boulder as their college destination.

The University of Colorado Boulder is committed to building a culturally diverse community of faculty, staff, and students dedicated to contributing to an inclusive campus environment. We are an Equal Opportunity employer, including veterans and individuals with disabilities.
