The University of Colorado Boulder (CU Boulder) invites inquiries, nominations and applications for the position of dean of the School of Education. The dean of the School of Education will provide visionary and strategic leadership to elevate CU Boulder's standing as a premier institution for research, teacher education, and community engagement.

The dean will be responsible for focusing on and growing the school's core strengths, fostering an environment of academic excellence and driving innovation in educational practice. The new dean will be a dynamic leader who can work effectively with faculty, staff, students, university collaborators and external partners to create a cohesive, equitable and forward-thinking educational community. Building on the school's extraordinary legacy, the dean will help to focus and prioritize the school's strengths and will work collaboratively with school, university and community leaders to craft a new collective and strategic direction that further strengthens the school's impact and reach. The dean will be called upon to retain, develop and recruit an exceptional faculty; cultivate an environment in which creativity and innovation can thrive; manage the school's resources wisely and productively; and lend their personal leadership to fostering a more diverse, equitable, just and inclusive community. The school desires a dean who will address the core challenges and institutional barriers to achieving equity and invest, through action, in the school's mission, particularly around social justice and diversity. In addition, the dean will build strong relationships internally and with community partners to leverage the tremendous support and opportunities afforded by this long-established entrepreneurial school.

The school consists of 34 tenured and tenure-track faculty, 25 teaching-track faculty, 19 research faculty, and 35 professional, technical, and administrative staff who support 290 undergraduate majors, 450 minors, 90 undergraduate teacher licensure students and 170 master's and 90 Ph.D. students. The School of Education budget is $17 million.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Academic Administration/Management

  • Implements the strategic missions of the School of Education and CU Boulder.

  • Is accountable for advancing diversity, equity and inclusion throughout the School of Education and participates with other campus leaders to implement campus DEI goals.

  • Oversees and manages the planning, implementation, administration, coordination and evaluation of all academic curricula and programs, support services and administrative functions of the school, including operating policies and procedures, through collaborative efforts with the faculty and staff of the school and other cognate units of the university.

  • Provides leadership, support and vision in developing and modifying academic programs, curricula, services, policies and procedures, in collaboration and consultation with the faculty, staff and other colleges/schools/departments to ensure academic excellence in meeting the needs of the students.

  • Promotes excellence in teaching among all instructional faculty within the school through faculty development activities and in collaboration with faculty.

  • Promotes and fosters scholarship, research and creative work within the school.

  • Confers regularly with associate deans, program chairs, faculty and staff to plan and evaluate academic programs and services of the school.

Human and Fiscal Resource Management

  • Exercises full supervisory authority, directly and indirectly, over full- and part-time faculty and staff.

  • Provides effective and efficient management and oversight of the resources and budget of the school, academic programs and dean's office including the preparation of the annual budget.

  • Provides coaching, mentorship, and opportunities for professional development and training to staff

  • Models inclusive and flexible leadership practices.

  • Attends to and is accountable for the professional culture and climate of the school.

  • In collaboration and consultation with the faculty, evaluates faculty and makes recommendations to the provost on faculty appointment, reappointment, promotion, tenure and termination.

  • Oversees and facilitates the annual performance and merit evaluation process for faculty and staff inclusive of recommending pay increases.

  • Assesses and plans for staffing needs and structures.

  • Allocates discretionary funds to initiate, support and promote initiatives that are consistent with the strategic direction of the school and the university.

  • Augments the financial resources of the school through private fundraising initiatives.

Fundraising and Development

  • In partnership with and under the direction of the chancellor through the CU Boulder Advancement team, fosters development activities, cultivates and solicits individual donors, foundations and corporations, and leads program directors in the development of initiatives and proposals.

Leadership and Service

  • Represents the School of Education to the university administration.

  • Serves on the Boulder campus Council of Deans and other campus bodies, committees or councils.

  • Serves as the School of Education's spokesperson at academic, social and public functions.

  • Engages intentionally in outreach activities to maintain diverse and inclusive collegial relationships with alumni and external constituencies of the school.

  • Maintains professional service activities to enhance their own professional and scholarly development.

What We Require

  • A doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution in one of the fields represented in the School of Education.

  • At least six years of progressive administrative and managerial experience in a research university.

  • A record of teaching, research and service that meets the qualifications necessary to be tenured at the rank of professor.

  • Demonstrated excellence as a leader and a strong reputation in the academic community.
