POSITION CONCEPT

Under the direction of the Senior Director of Operations, the Theatre Production Manager is responsible for overseeing the physical operations of the Theatre and rehearsal spaces for the Boston Center for the Arts (BCA). These spaces include the BCA Plaza Theatre, BCA Black Box Theatre, Martin Hall, and rehearsal spaces. The Theatre Production Manager is tasked with overseeing theatre operations, theatre resource maintenance, delegating and responding to emergencies, managing risk, coordinating and collecting info from theatre renters, and conducting production site visits. The Theatre Production Manager works collaboratively with the Theatre Rental Manager, and Operations Department to develop and implement policies, procedures, programs, and systems. This position works with the Theatre Team to develop long and short-range planning. This individual must show maturity, leadership, and an ability to effectively communicate and follow the mission of BCA and the policies of BCA Leadership.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The duties of this position include but are not limited to

ADMINISTRATIVE

  • Maintain inventories and order specialized supplies in collaboration with the Operations department and Theatre Team.

  • Maintain floor plans, instruction manuals, protocols, and procedures for physical operations in theatre and rehearsal venues.

  • Assess and provide approval for technical and physical elements in productions/ events happening on theatrical and rehearsal venues on campus, ensuring decisions regarding the physical details of productions are carried out safely and in accordance with city, state, and safety regulations.

  • Support BCA produced events and programs.

  • Attend meetings and serve on teams as assigned.

  • Any other duties as assigned.

    TECHNICAL

  • Schedule and conduct theatre renter check-in, production walk-throughs,  and checkouts.

  • Schedule when appropriate and supervise BCA, part-time technical assistance staff, including the assignment of work, and follow through on the completion of work.

  • Operate, maintain, and safeguard the technical assets of BCA theatre venues, including outlining the use of lighting, sound, communications equipment, and the use and maintenance of stage facilities.

  • Monitor the condition of lighting, sound, rigging equipment, etc.; complete o r arrange for necessary repair and replacement, as budgeted; perform preventive maintenance on equipment.

  • Serve as an on-call representative for users of the BCA theatre venues. Assess, troubleshoot, and respond to emergencies as necessary.

  • Provide production support for events and maintenance in all BCA spaces, as assigned. This may include painting, cleaning, building, and maintaining. This work may involve lifting, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, grasping, pushing, and pulling.

  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe operation of theatrical and rehearsal venues.

  • Maintain irregular and extended working hours at times as the schedule permits.

  • Assist with the safe maintenance of all public spaces.

  • Any other duties as assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    The successful candidate will possess most, if not all, of the following skills, experience, and attributes:

    Knowledge and Experience

  • 3-5 years in a Production Management role.

  • Proven effectiveness as a manager of staff, including knowledge of professional development, performance appraisal, and equity, diversity, and inclusion practices.

  • Familiarity with construction practices and laws governing historic and public buildings’ construction, maintenance, and repair.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills necessary for regular contact with professional peers, staff, patrons, contractors, and city officials.

  • Experience working in a collaborative environment.

  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency with  Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, Zoom/ Google Meet, and CAD software.

  • Experience creating, organizing, and executing comprehensive facilities management plans

  • An ability to deal with a wide range of technical issues and a working knowledge of equipment, techniques, methods, and procedures of theatre, dance, and music production. This includes stage, set, sound, and lighting design and implementation; stage management; computerized lighting and sound systems; stage carpentry; appropriate safety precautions and procedures.

  • An ability to analyze and evaluate the need for technical support for various events and performances.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit, bend and stoop;  use hands to operate objects, tools, and/or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance;  stoop, kneel, crouch and/or crawl; talk and/or hear; taste and/or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The Employee must have the ability to work in outdoor and indoor work environments.

    JOB STRUCTURE AND BENEFITS:

    This position reports to the Senior Director of Operations. The salary range is $53,000-55,000/year. This position is full-time. Occasional weekend and evening hours will be required. Boston Center for the Arts offers a comprehensive benefits package including 80% covered medical and dental insurance, an FSA plan, short-term disability, and a 403(b) retirement savings plan plus complimentary tickets to BCA and BCA partner events and performances.

    All staff are required to work in-person, and on-site at the BCA campus; there is no option for fully remote work.  However, staff are provided with a bank of remote work days to use annually.  Additionally, it is a requirement of all staff to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination and booster.
