Boston Public Schools Stipend Opportunity: Early College Multilingual Learning Specialist (SY24-25) in Boston, Massachusetts
* This position is a stipended position and is only open to current employees whose current job status allows them to participate in these opportunities.* POSITION OVERVIEW: The position will reside in the Office of Secondary Schools in the Boston Public Schools, reporting to the Director of Early College. The timeline for this position is one academic semester with an option to renew for future semesters. Boston Public Schools is partnering with Roxbury Community College to innovate and strengthen college course-taking opportunities for English Learners. Schools participating in an Early College Consortium Pilot will work collaboratively to increase opportunities for multilingual students to explore diverse higher education pathways and career options through targeted coursework and resources. The Early College ML specialist plays a vital role in the success of participating students by providing supportive and high-quality instruction and student support in the early college classroom. The BPS ML specialist will have a background in teaching various English proficiency levels and using data to support differentiation in the early college curricula. The ML specialist collaborates with RCC faculty both inside and outside of the classroom to co-develop high-quality materials and implement culturally and linguistically sustaining teaching practices throughout the college course. The ML Specialist works to foster a coherent bridge between a student's high school and college course-taking experience and prepare them for post-secondary success. RESPONSIBILITIES: Work with school(s) administration and BPS to coordinate an effective, seamless onboarding process for students and families. Communicate program expectations and benefits clearly to participating students and families. Prepare and review course materials with faculty, meeting weekly to ensure understanding of curriculum and content. Partner with faculty to create accessible lessons and assessments for multilingual students, including scaffolding and differentiating curriculum. Create student-friendly language objectives weekly. Build personalized relationships with students and maintain consistent communication to understand their strengths and postsecondary goals. Monitor student progress and work with partners to create and implement necessary interventions and supports to ensure student persistence and success. Collaborate and meet with school liaisons to help facilitate student success and develop relationships across schools. Record best practices and recommendations for future programming to strengthen and expand access for multilingual learners in college course-taking. Assist liaisons in coordinating with students to engage in DESE/AIR feedback sessions. Attend scheduled professional development, student orientation, information sessions, and special celebrations for students and families. Meet frequently with the Multilingual Curriculum Coordinator and Office of Secondary Schools to ensure effective collaboration and implementation of early college pilot. Anticipated Schedule Timeline: January 13, 2025 - May 23, 2025 One academic semester with the option to renew Desired Start Date: January 13, 2025 Hours: 5-7 hours per week *The position requires in person attendance at Roxbury Community College on Mondays & Wednesdays 3:30 - 4:45pm Hiring Manager: Katie Hill, Director of Early College, khill@bostonpublicschools.org Qualifications: The ideal candidate for the ML Specialist will work at a high school in Boston Public Schools as an ESL/ML teacher or a licensed teacher with extensive experience in teaching multilingual students and curriculum.
