WSP USA Senior Hydropower Electrical Engineer - Protection and Controls Design in Boston, Massachusetts

WSP is currently initiating a search for a full-time Senior Hydropower Electrical Engineer - Protection and Controls Design for our Seattle, WA office .

The following locations will also be considered: Boston, MA or Portland, OR .

Be involved in projects within our Clean Energy Business Line and be a part of a part of a rapidly expanding group that provides trusted advisor and engineer of record services to Hydropower and Utility clients throughout the United States.

This Opportunity

This position directly advances local and regional responses to Climate Change by supporting the owners and operators of clean hydro power and other renewable resources. This position will provide delivery of protection and control designs for hydropower generation and interconnection facilities for our hydropower projects, including pumped storage, in support of the build-out of the bulk electric system in support of this clean power in the West. Work with interdisciplinary teams on various hydropower and utility services projects. Perform engineering duties from conceptual stages of projects through construction. Procurement of materials, project cost estimating, and quality control reviews. Work with drafting department to prepare drawings and specifications for various deliverables. Regularly meet and corresponds with clients, material vendors, and sub-contractors. Travel for project site meeting and field evaluations. Actively engages and supports business development initiatives in the hydropower market. Your days will be a mix of working from the home or the office, and field trips to the nation’s majestic mountains and rivers.

Your Impact

  • The engineer will coordinate his/her design activities to maintain project schedules and ensure successful project completion. The engineer will also assist the Estimating Team in preparation of estimates and project proposals.

  • This position is accountable to provide the design activities in accordance with all applicable codes and standards, including all WSP’s policies and procedures, such as Safety, Environmental, Quality Assurance and Quality Control.

  • Design of protection and control systems for hydropower facilities such as power houses, pump houses and meter/relay houses, as well industrial pumps and power generation turbines; including governors and exciters.

  • Delivery of accurate and thorough designs that will meet industry standards and specifications and meet good engineering practice with excellent constructability.

  • Prepare project specifications for material and equipment purchase and installation.

  • Review of internal and external designs for code compliance, good design practice and constructability.

  • Resolving site queries, attending site meetings, and performing site inspections during the construction phase of projects.

  • Maintaining complete project documentation with respect to substation design and construction, including all completion packages, as-built requirements and return data information.

  • Making and maintaining appropriate commitments to project teams and coordinating design activities with multi-disciplined project team members.

  • Maintaining good working relationships with internal groups that support projects.

  • Maintaining good working relationships with material suppliers, contractors, and any others that affect the quality, schedule, and cost of projects.

Required Qualifications

  • Employment authorization to work in the United States immediately

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, or closely related discipline.

  • 5+ years of relevant post education experience in engineering discipline and prior electrical design experience.

  • Engineer license or the ability to acquire within one year (Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Utah, California, Nevada, or Montana).

  • Highly proficient with electrical engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, and the application to permitting and project work-related issues.

  • Knowledge of modern electric power systems, power system protection and transmission & distribution systems.

  • Knowledge of applicable industry standards including the National Electric Code (NEC), National Electric Safety Code (NESC), and IEEE. Ability to perform independently and in a team environment and maintain project ownership.

  • Familiarity with relay protection schemes and relay logic

  • Interpretation of relay documents and Protection & Control design drawings.

  • Basic understanding of SCADA design.

  • Basic understanding of IEC61850 and DNP3 protocols.

  • Candidate should be able to run short circuit studies in ASPEN one liner.

  • Provide percent complete as well as Estimated Time to Completion when requested by project managers or lead engineers.

  • Provide input into improvement ideas during project execution and close-out.

  • Prepare technical specifications for the electrical equipment, evaluate proposals from vendors, and review vendor drawings.

  • Possess working knowledge of design software including AutoCAD and MicroStation. May be required to prepare or revise design drawings.

  • Delivery of accurate and thorough designs that will meet industry standards and specifications and meet good engineering practice with excellent constructability.

  • Resolving site queries, attending site meetings and performing site inspections during the construction phase of projects.

  • Maintaining complete project documentation with respect to substation design and construction, including all completion packages, as-built requirements and return data information.

  • Experienced user MS Office applications, strong written and verbal communication skills and attention to detail

  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.

  • Candidate must undergo pre-employment drug screening and a criminal background investigation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in electrical engineering.

  • Experience working in consulting firms and hydro, solar, wind, biomass, and thermal projects

  • 40-Hour OSHA Health & Safety Training (HAZWOPER) (29 CFR 1910.120) preferred.

  • Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training desired.

Compensation:

  • Expected Salary (Seattle, WA) $100,000 - $160,000

WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and/or offer for this, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location.
