Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Principal Building Systems Research Engineer/Scientist - Level V in Boston, Massachusetts

Overview

The Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings Division of PNNL is accelerating the transition to a decarbonized, efficient, resilient, and secure energy system through basic and applied research. We leverage a strong technical foundation in power and energy systems and in advanced data analytics to drive innovation, transform markets, and shape energy policy.

The Building Systems Group is seeking a senior level engineer\scientist with deep expertise in building systems, particularly heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and controls. In addition, candidates should have a leadership background that includes applied research related to residential, multifamily and commercial building energy efficiency, building technology field validation studies, research design, analysis, and execution. The ideal candidate is a nationally/internationally recognized expert in the HVAC field and has led multiple complex research teams with universities, national laboratories and/or other research organizations. The candidate should have a research portfolio that includes robust studies in the field of residential HVAC and control strategies, with demonstrated experience in both physical and simulation-based studies. The ideal candidate will also have a solid understanding of the organizational structure of the Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy. They should possess strong communication skills to effectively engage with senior Department of Energy stakeholders, articulating the value proposition and key drivers for authorizing new research initiatives and associated project work.

This position will support the buildings systems research team at PNNL for both DOE and other government agencies. The candidate should have a passion for making our nations buildings more energy and water efficient, while maximizing indoor environmental quality and comfort. The ideal candidate will value coaching and mentoring and be self-driven to write grants and proposals for new work that contribute to efforts to expand current areas of study. The ideal candidate will stay current with the latest academic journal articles, particularly in the fields of HVAC and HVAC controls, and has also contribute to publications in these areas.

Responsibilities

The position requires strong analytical and communication skills, and the ability to both lead and work in teams with multiple research entities, national laboratories, federal agencies, states, regional energy efficiency organizations, trade groups, utilities, and manufacturers. The position will also involve communication with leading scientists, engineers, managers at DOE and its national laboratories, with consultants and academics, with utility and market transformation organizations, with manufacturers and trade organizations, and with all facets of the supply chain and market, including consumers.

The position requires strong knowledge and experience related to the analysis and communication of building systems research priorities, especially related to HVAC and HVAC controls, and results including the following:

  • Development of building systems research plans, test reports, and new proposals.

  • Working with national, state, regional, local stakeholders to implement new technologies and policies for saving energy.

  • Communication, interaction, and collaboration with a range of stakeholders including consumers, manufacturers, trade groups, buyer’s groups, energy efficiency organizations, policy makers, utilities, and product supply chains utilize on how they interact with building systems and how to successfully introduce new technologies, materials, policies and procedures.

  • Demonstrated success in developing new business through the writing and presenting of research grants and proposals.

This position will occasionally travel to attend conferences and present results of work in a variety of forums, support relevant education in public forums and webinars, in meetings with DOE and other national laboratories, in PNNL internal meetings, or conferences, and in stakeholder meetings.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS/BA and 9+ years of relevant experience -OR-

  • MS/MA and 7+ years of relevant experience -OR-

  • PhD with 5+ year of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Deep knowledge and experience with residential HVAC technologies and control systems.

  • Demonstrated ability to conceive, lead, and provide technical oversight on complex research projects with interdisciplinary staff.

  • Education in the areas of mechanical engineering, architectural engineering, electrical engineering, building science, building systems, or computational sciences, statistics, or public policy.

  • Experience working with and proposing work to the Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy.

  • In-depth knowledge of building science, building systems, building controls, heat pump water heaters and HVAC systems.

  • Background in energy science or policy, technology assessment, or metrics development and communication.
