The Boston University Center for the Humanities (BUCH) seeks a dynamic and innovative Public Humanities Administrator to support and advance its public-facing humanities programming. Reporting to the BUCH Director and Managing Director, the successful candidate will coordinate and promote public events, manage communications, oversee student workers, and foster relationships with community organizations. This position also involves seeking external funding to sustain and grow BUCH's public humanities initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Public-Facing Humanities Programming

Lead and support public events curated by the BUCH Director and Associate Directors. Collaborate with CAS faculty and students on public-facing programs and projects. Cultivate partnerships with external community organizations to create new programming opportunities. Work with BUCH leadership to develop a strategic vision for public humanities activities aligned with BUCH's charter and goals. Manage the BUCH Public Affiliates Program.

Communications Management

Coordinate internal communications with other CAS units and schools to schedule and announce events. Oversee external communications and public relations with regional and national humanities organizations. Partner with BUCH leadership on outreach to local and national media. Develop and execute a comprehensive communications strategy to raise the profile of BU humanities faculty research and programming.

Market Research, Writing, and Fundraising

Stay informed of peer institutions' public humanities activities and programming. Identify and pursue external funding opportunities, including writing grant applications. Collaborate with BUCH leadership to establish strategic funding priorities. Manage fundraising and donor relations for major projects. Provide pre-award grant support to BU humanities faculty as needed.

Website and Digital Presence Management

Maintain and update BUCH project websites, including Pedestrian Space, Favorite Poem Project, and Be Human Summer Program. Provide web management support to faculty-led projects funded by BUCH. Enhance the social media presence for the Favorite Poem Project and other initiatives.

Student Worker Supervision

Supervise undergraduate and graduate student workers on program coordination and support. Mentor students in administrative skill development and ensure project deadlines are met. Recruit and interview student workers, including the dedicated Favorite Poem Project intern from the Creative Writing MFA program.

Required Skills

  • Bachelors degree with 3-5 years of relevant experience OR Master's degree with 1-3 years of relevant experience.

  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

  • Experience in event planning, communications, grant writing, and/or website management is highly desirable.
