JOB DESCRIPTION (Duties and Requirements): Learns and performs a variety of duties associated with the operation of a production unit necessary to produce, monitor and pelletize carbon black. Inspects and monitors all mechanical equipment, including the carbon black distribution system. Insures proper pelletizer operation and provides maintenance to insure the operation of the unit. Assists work in a variety of craft skills to repair and maintain plant equipment and utilities, necessary to the production of carbon black. Repair activities may include mechanical, millwrighting, welding, bricklaying painting, and other maintenance/repair activities. Detects and reports faulty equipment. Sets up and operates/various machine tools, portable power and standard hand tools. Operates mobile equipment such as a crane, backhoe, forklift, and winch truck. Serves as a member of Working Team and utilizes Quality Management System skills(statistical process controls, problem solving) to help identify opportunities and solve production unit problems. Performs other miscellaneous plant-wide to include; collects both loose and pellitized samples; removes foreign material from distribution; relieves other Furnace Plant Operators when scheduled; make burner changes; replaces bagfilter valve cylinders; repairs leaking valves; helps other Furnace Plant Operators as needed; gauges storage tanks; prepares, positions, and loads hopper cars; re-routes and confirms flow of carbon black in distribution system; adjust binder, water and black flow to pinmixers to maintain quality of pellets; performs cleanup in assigned unit area. Learns and complies with plant policies and procedures. Actively participates in Plant Safety programs *Employee must learn and observe applicable company policies and safe practices and perform all duties assigned by supervisors. This description covers the significant duties for the job, but may not include other occasional assignments which may be required. EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:*

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Math skills including decimals, fractions, percentages, and/or simple algebra
  • Understand processes, systems, equipment, and/or tools
  • Develop working understanding of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems
  • When knowledge of all furnace plant units is fully obtained, the incumbent may be considered for Furnace Plant Operator position
  • Must be willing to obtain the Chemical Operator Certification within 4 years.
