Summary Statement

Boise Parks and Recreation maintains more than 90 developed parks across the city, approximately 210 miles of Ridge to Rivers trails in the Boise Foothills, 25 miles of the Boise River Greenbelt pathway, and thousands of acres of open space .

Temporary Landscape Designer:

  • Prepares conceptual designs and technical drawings for parks, open spaces, and related facilities.

  • Prepares cost estimates, feasibility studies, on-site surveys, and layout of facilities, trails, and other related designs.

  • Plans and coordinates projects and communicates with all parties involved.

  • Prepares contract documents, drawings, and specifications for bidding.

  • This position works under limited supervision.

  • Works up to 19 hours per week.

  • This position is designated as At-Will.

Essential Functions

Prepares design and construction drawings and layouts using AutoCAD working from specifications, notes, sketches and redlines. (70%)

Provides and coordinates technical and contract assistance with the construction manager. Participates in comprehensive parks and open space planning and the preparation of master plans. Participates in the development of policies, procedures and practices related to landscape architecture. Prepares requests for proposals for professional services or improvements on parks properties. Prepares and submits applications for local, state and federal land use permits on park and open space related improvements. Answers questions and provides information to the public. (15%)

Assists with planning, designing, and organizing park construction projects from inception through design, bidding, award and construction phases. Coordinates aspects of project activities during the design phase and secures easements, provides cost estimates, prepares contracts and obtains necessary permits and license agreements from outside agencies. Communicates with private property owners and relevant public and private organizations regarding the process and implementation of projects. Researches and develops project schedules. (15%)

Requirements

Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training

Associate's degree in computer-aided design (CAD) and one year of experience with landscape architectural projects and coordination, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

Knowledge of: landscape design and drafting practices; technical specification writing, including contract preparation; surveying practices; project and construction management processes; computer usage including related software; record keeping and filing practices; government contract and licensing processes; erosion and sediment control; and basic math, budgeting and cost analysis.

Ability to: prepare plans and understand specifications and contract documents; prepare maps, concept plans and construction drawings using AutoCAD; use various computer applications and equipment; understand and apply graphic forms including drafting, sketching and color rendering; prepare reports, conduct research efforts, respond to public information requests and prepare and conduct presentations; handle multiple projects and tasks with strict deadlines; communicate clearly with coworkers, consultants, contractors and the public; communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance; and perform all essential functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without reasonable accommodation.

Individuals must be capable of operating vehicles safely and have an acceptable driving record.

Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in landscape architecture or closely related field and one year of experience in planning, design, computer-aided drafting, parks maintenance, landscape construction or related public service activities.

Knowledge of: principles and practices of landscape architecture, parks, recreation and open space planning; principles and practices of landscape design, irrigation system design, storm water management, erosion control and surveying; principles and practices of resource management including native vegetation, wetlands and water quality; practices and methods in park and open space maintenance; principles and procedures of public contract bidding and purchasing; public involvement practices including stakeholder research, interviews, charrette and workshop design and facilitation, and survey design and administration; and construction techniques.

Licensing And Other Requirements

Valid state-issued driver’s license.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is occasionally lifting/carrying up to 20 pounds. The noise level is occasionally moderate and rarely loud. Work includes sensory ability to talk, hear and touch. Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. Employees will sit, stand, walk, reach, grasp, climb and balance. Position requires hand/finger dexterity.

Working Environment

The work environment will include inside conditions, outdoor weather conditions, extreme temperatures, in wet and humid conditions, areas of dust, odors, mist and gases or other airborne matter. Employees are exposed to mechanical and electrical hazards. Employees will also drive a vehicle as part of this position.
