Summary Statement

Fleet Maintenance Mechanic performs journey-level maintenance, diagnosis and repair of vehicles and equipment used by the City of Boise and local municipalities.

This position works under general supervision. This position will primarily perform maintenance and repair work on medium, heavy-duty trucks, off-road, industrial equipment, and fire apparatus. This position will require a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brake, tanker, and passenger endorsement; or the ability to obtain one

Essential Functions

Performs all duties of an entry level mechanic, in addition to providing mentoring and team coordination. Performs more complex, skilled tasks and assists others as required.

Performs preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment in accordance with manufacturer specifications or City of Boise requirements. Performs safety inspection of the vehicle or equipment. Diagnoses, documents and repairs vehicle systems identified through preventative maintenance inspections or as required due to vehicle or equipment failure. Repairs, rebuilds or replaces components utilizing specialty tools specific to the mechanic trade.

Installs, diagnoses problems and repairs specialized equipment and systems. Performs fabrication and welding repairs on vehicles and equipment. Coordinates services and repairs with department designees. Greets customers and advises them on the type and estimated cost of repairs, repair status and time to vehicle completion. Communicates with vendors, dealers and manufacturers to facilitate warranty or sublet repairs. Assists with ordering parts and services. Processes repair orders in the computer system. Verifies accuracy of the equipment meter, parts, sublet and services provided, along with the entry of technician comments to explain course of service or repair.

Requirements

Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training

  • 2 years technical/trade school or equivalent military training and

  • 4 years of experience in an automobile, heavy truck or equipment maintenance or repair organization,

  • an associate's degree, or

  • an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

Knowledge of:

  • maintenance and repair of heavy industrial equipment and trucks;

  • safety in equipment operation and repair; operation and repair of automotive equipment and tools;

  • diagnostics, electronic repair, mechanical repair and fabrication on systems common to automobiles and police or fire emergency vehicles; and

  • computer usage including related software.

Ability to:

  • follow policies and procedures;

  • work without close supervision;

  • furnish own hand tools;

  • provide quality customer service;

  • safely operate a variety of vehicles, maintenance and repair equipment;

  • communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance; and

  • perform all essential functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without reasonable accommodation.

Individuals must be capable of operating vehicles safely and have an acceptable driving record.

Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training

8 years of experience in an automobile, heavy truck or equipment maintenance/repair organization.

Master Level Certification by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) program in automotive and heavy truck.

Certification in the Emergency Vehicle Technician Association (EVT) program in the areas of Airfield Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF), fire truck electrical and emergency vehicle technician.

Obtain an Airport (SIDA) security access, a Mobile Air Conditioning Society (MACS) license for A/C recovery, recycling and recharge and/or Ada County Air Quality Board emission testing license.

Licensing And Other Requirements

Valid state-issued driver's license.

Class A Commercial Driver's License with air brakes and passenger endorsement.

Special Requirements

Applicants must be able to pass:

City of Boise background check processes which includes a criminal history check and reference checks in accordance with the City of Boise Hiring Process Regulation

Drug Free Workplace: In accordance with the City of Boise Drug Free Workplace Regulation, this position is designated as safety sensitive and is subject to testing requirements including Post Offer Applicant Testing, Random Testing, Reasonable Suspicion, Post - Accident, etc. Applicants will be required to submit to screening for illegal drug use prior to hire. Appointment to this position is contingent upon a negative pre-employment drug test.

Persons in this position must have a CDL that can handle a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 or more pounds.

Physical Efforts

While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently lifting/carrying up to 35 pounds, occasionally lifting/carrying up to 75 pounds and rarely lifting/carrying up to 100 pounds. Also, the employee is frequently pushing/pulling up to 35 pounds and occasionally pushing/pulling up to 100 pounds. The noise level is frequently very loud. Work includes sensory ability to talk, hear, smell and touch. Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. Employees will sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, grasp, climb and balance. Position requires hand/finger dexterity.

Working Environment

The work environment will include inside conditions, outdoor weather conditions, extreme temperatures, in wet and humid conditions, areas of dust, odors, mist and gases or other airborne matter. Employees are exposed to mechanical and electrical hazards and work in/at heights. Employees will also drive a vehicle as part of this position. Work includes protected exposure to bodily fluids and chemicals. May be subject to icy and wet surfaces in parking lot, roadways, or work sites as well as tripping hazards.

This position works: to cover occasional call outs.
