Mandatory Requirements to qualify at the NGA-6F grade level:

  • (1) Must be an enlisted member of the Idaho Air National Guard and be qualified as AFSC 3E731/3E751; or be currently attending the DoD Firefighter school at Goodfellow, AFB or be eligible and willing to enlist in the Idaho Air National Guard.

Provide written response with your current military grade, job title, AFSC and unit of assignment; if you currently are attending DoD Firefighter school with anticipated graduation date; if in another state your willingness to ITS; or your willingness and ability to enlist in the Idaho Air National Guard.

  • (2) Must have and maintain a valid and unrestricted state issued driver’s license (from any state), and be eligible to obtain a military driver’s license.Provide your driver’s license number, issuing state, license expiration date, and the full name specified on the license.(Do not provide a copy of your driver’s license.)

  • (3) Must have, or be eligible to obtain, and maintain a favorable T3 (SECRET) Federal Background Investigation. If a selected candidate does not have a current favorable T3, as a condition of employment he/she must submit to the investigation process immediately upon hire/appointment. (At a minimum, a favorable suitability determination by the State Security Manager is required prior to appointment into this position.)

  • (4) Must possess the following certification levels by an IFSAC or Pro Board Accredited Program (certifications will have affixed IFSAC or Pro Board numbered seal): Driver Operator Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF), Driver Operator Mobile Water Supply (MWS), Driver Operator Pumper, and NIMS/ICS 100, 200, 700 and 800. (Attach supporting documentationto your application.)

  • (5) Must obtain certification as a State of Idaho Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) within 1-year of hire.

  • (6) Must have a minimum of 12-months of experience as a firefighter.

Mandatory Requirements to qualify at the NGA-5F Trainee grade level:

  • (1) Must be an enlisted member of the Idaho Air National Guard and be qualified as AFSC 3E731/3E751; or be currently attending the DoD Firefighter school at Goodfellow, AFB or be eligible and willing to enlist in the Idaho Air National Guard.

JOB TITLE: FIREFIGHTER DRIVER-OPERATOR

POSITION CONTROL NUMBER(S): 7035

NGA-5F (Trainee Grade)

INTRODUCTION: This position is assigned to the Gowen Field Fire Department (124 CES-CEF, 124 MSG, 124 FW), Idaho Air National Guard (IDANG), functioning within the State of Idaho – Military Division. The primary purpose of this position is to prevent the loss of life and property from fire. Performs as a crew member engaged in airfield, structural firefighting, crash-rescue, and Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) response. Incumbent drives and operates firefighting vehicles and responds to the presence or the potential release of hazardous materials for the purpose of stopping or controlling the situation.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. As directed by the Fire Crew Chief, drives assigned crash/rescue/structural firefighting vehicle to the scene of an emergency and operates equipment as required.

  2. Follows specific instructions of the Fire Crew Chief while driving to crash/structural fire scenes and maneuvers the vehicle into the most practical position at the scene. Operates pumps to maintain adequate pressure of water, foam or chemicals. Performs rescue work and first aid as required by emergency situations within capabilities and medical protocols.

  3. Participates in classroom and practical demonstrations in structural and crash rescue techniques, first aid, fire prevention, conducting inspections, and in the use of a variety of modern structural/crash firefighting equipment. Maintains knowledge of current directives and regulations; demonstrates the ability to define and describe procedures and the proper workings of equipment, conferring with the Fire Crew Chief for clarification of technical details.

  4. As assigned, performs duties as the Alarm Room Operator to include operation of alarm systems, recording devices, electronic log book entries, reports, and general clerical work needed in support of the fire station operations.

  5. Inspects and performs first and second echelon maintenance of fire equipment such as extinguishers, fire hose, vehicle suppression systems, and equipment on vehicles. Documents and reports any deficiencies or damage of equipment to the Fire Crew Chief.

  6. Maintains constant awareness of frequent changes in cockpit design, ordnance placement, and cabin layouts of assigned and transient aircraft to determine how they affect the difficulty of rescue and firefighting. Must be able to operate or deactivate various specialized systems such as ejection seats and oxygen supply systems.

  7. Performs heavy lifting during emergency situations; climbs and maneuvers around high and tight places; operates a self-contained breathing apparatus for 15 minutes.

  8. Promotes a respectful workplace that complies with policies of the Adjutant General. Observes and ensures compliance with all applicable laws, rules, regulations and policies and serves as a role model for the Whistleblower Protection Program, EEO, security and workplace safety practices, policies and regulations at all times. Maintains a safe and drug/alcohol free workplace.

  9. Performs other related duties and projects as necessary or assigned.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:The incumbent works under general supervision of the Assistant Fire Chief and receives operational and technical guidance from the Assistant Fire Chief or the Fire Crew Chief. Assignments are given in the form of verbal and written instructions and inspection reports. Work is subject to inspection for acceptability, performance, and adherence to instructions and established standards. Guidelines include technical orders, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards, operating instructions, manuals and military directives.

PERSONAL WORK CONTACTS:The incumbent's contacts are with Boise Ground Control, Boise City Fire Department, Idaho Military Division employees, Idaho National Guard members, and personnel from all armed services.

WORKING CONDITIONS:This position is considered an operations position requiring the incumbent to work uncommon tours of duty, rotating shift assignments and other-than-normal duty hours. This position requires the incumbent to work 48-hour shifts. Shift schedules consist of one 48-hours shift followed by 96-hours off (shift schedules are subject to change), with an average of 56 hours per week. Work schedules include evenings, weekends and holidays. Incumbent will work a shift schedule as directed by the Fire Chief. This position is considered mission essential. Periodic travel, both in-state and out-of-state, via all modes of transportation, is required. Incumbent must submit to and pass initial and periodic security/background checks, physicals, performance/fitness tests, and drug tests. Wear of special clothing with appropriate markings and protective equipment is required. Travel via all modes of transportation may be required in the accomplishment of assigned training and duties. Overnight travel for moderate periods may be required.
