Idaho Power — located in vibrant Boise, Idaho — is looking for an Engineer I, II, or Senior to join our Customer Relations and Energy Efficiency Programs team. It’s an exciting time to work for Idaho Power. While this position is based at Idaho Power’s downtown Boise location, we offer both flexible schedules and the opportunity to work up to 40% remote. Relocation assistance may also be provided to the successful candidate.

What does an Engineer on the Customer Relations and Energy Efficiency Programs team do for us?

They work to encourage cost effective energy savings for commercial and industrial customers by investigating new efficient technologies for application to facility system operation and maintenance. They will evaluate, analyze, and recommend equipment, materials and components for many types of commercial and industrial mechanical/electrical/thermal/building systems such as: pumps, fans, heat exchangers, building shell, drinking water, wastewater, industrial process systems, lighting, compressed air, refrigeration, chillers, compressors, hydraulic and HVAC systems and controls.

They also:

  • Plan and lead energy efficiency projects, assignments, and technical investigations

  • Recommend energy efficiency systems and action schemes

  • Perform energy analysis of the mechanical system including calculating or modeling the process or building system elements

  • Evaluate progress and results, recommending changes in procedures

  • Exercise moderate technical judgment in decision-making and independent action

  • Are responsible for budgeting, financial accountability, and timelines on assigned projects and programs

  • Model, evaluate and analyze mechanical and electrical systems for planning, recommendation, and configuration of energy efficient equipment for commercial and industrial processes and buildings, including compressed air, refrigeration, HVAC, lighting, water hydraulics, process pumps and fans

  • Utilize and create energy analysis tools

  • Review operations reports and determine whether process and building system operations were proper

  • Troubleshoot and make corrections to energy analysis and systems

  • Measure and verify energy efficient systems and remedial action schemes

  • Act as a liaison between other departments and organizations

  • Ensure compliance with guidance regarding cost effectiveness and regulatory

  • Utilize industry and discipline related knowledge to interpret and comply with regulations as required by NERC, FERC, WECC, EPA, NESC, OSHA, FCC, etc.

Engineer I:

Operating under general supervision and with oversight, an Engineer I is developing technical expertise in their field. This role plans and leads assignments and projects, may interface with internal departments and external organizations, and receives guidance from leaders and other engineers as needed.

Engineer II:

Operating under limited supervision, an Engineer II has an intermediate level of technical expertise in their field. This role plans and leads moderately complex assignments and projects, interfaces with internal departments and external organizations, and receives high-level guidance from leaders and other engineers as needed.

Senior Engineer:

Operating under minimal supervision and using independent initiative, Senior Engineers have comprehensive technical expertise in their field. This role plans and leads complex assignments and projects, interfaces with internal departments and external organizations, and mentors other engineers and engineering support staff as needed.

A COMPETITIVE CANDIDATE WILL HAVE

Knowledge of:

  • General engineering principles

  • Mechanical Engineering and energy efficiency, commercial and industrial processes and facilities and their business environment

  • Mechanical system energy analysis tools and programs

  • Energy codes and industry standards

  • Energy efficient technologies

  • Rotating machines such as compressors, fans, pumps, and motors

  • Thermal systems such as refrigeration systems, chillers, heat exchangers, pumps, fans, compressors, hydraulic, and HVAC systems

  • Conveyance and process systems such as drinking water and wastewater treatment

  • Industrial system and commercial building control systems

  • Harmonic compliance as it relates to installation of energy efficient equipment

Skills in:

  • Troubleshooting operational systems

  • Gathering, organizing, and analyzing project data

  • Measuring and evaluating data analysis techniques and trends

  • Program management

  • Process improvement

  • Interdisciplinary skills

  • Communication, both oral and written

  • Computers and software use, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Ability to:

  • Support energy efficiency programs and projects through measure identification, specification, evaluation, and testing of mechanical equipment and associated components

  • Perform concise energy efficiency analyses and use good judgment to compare alternatives, report problems, alternatives, and recommendations

  • Analyze datasets and databases

  • Prepare clear and comprehensive technical reports and giving effective internal and external presentations

  • Effectively respond to changes required by new codes, standards, and regulations

  • Manage and coordinate programs, projects, vendors, and contracts

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships

  • Work both independently and on project teams

  • Develop alternatives and work with others to evaluate their value and potential for meeting company needs

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution

OR

  • Bachelor in Engineering from a non-ABET accredited institution and a P.E. license

Preferred:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution

Experience:

  • Engineer I – 0-2 years related experience

  • Engineer II – 2 or more years of related experience

  • Senior Engineer – 6 years of related engineering experience OR 5 years of related engineering experience plus PE or advanced engineering degree, and 3 years in the area of expertise

Preferred:

  • Engineer I/II – Engineer in Training (EIT) designation

  • Senior Engineer – 3 years in the area of expertise and/or Professional Engineer (PE)

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Travel with out-of-town stays may be required

  • Senior Engineer: For internal candidates, must have 6 months or greater at Engineer II level, Step 13

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This is an office position with occasional field work, it requires working at a desk/computer for extended periods of time. It requires the use of office equipment, fine motor skills including typing on the computer, dialing phones, filing paper, and working in close proximity to other people. There may be occasional lifts of no more than 10 lbs. Walking on even/uneven surfaces and ascents/descents, up to 5 miles daily, and while carrying 14-26 lbs. of equipment. Lifting of up to 36 lbs. and carrying up to 30 lbs., (up to 50 feet), is performed. Hiking/Snowshoeing is performed up to 1 mile. Climbing of ladders/racks and work within elevated lifts (up to 40 feet high) with competency in use of safety equipment is required. Squatting, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lying at ground level is performed to work within confined spaces of power plants/dams/generators, for extended intervals up to a full shift. Driving is required to perform work throughout the IPC territory, (3-7 hours) The above is a summary of the primary essential functions of the position.
