Position Purpose:

Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center is seeking a Certified Surgical Tech (CST) for our Main Operating Room in Boise! This site is a Level II Trauma Center, offering definitive care for critically injured patients throughout the region.

Certified Surgical Technologists prepare rooms, supplies and equipment for surgical procedures for physicians and surgical staff under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. They are responsible for complying with safety policies, recognizing & correcting breaks in aseptic technique, performing equipment checks for proper functionality, and reviewing/updating surgeon preference cards.

Our ideal candidate has the knowledge and skills to care for patients of all ages while communicating effectively with surgical teams and supervisory staff. They will have the ability to anticipate and prioritize surgeon needs, as well as independently manage instrument, sponge, and sharp counts for all procedures.

  • Schedule Information: This is a full-time benefited position working on day shift (4-10s: 7am-5:30pm or 3-12s: 7am-7:30pm). Weekday call (Monday-Friday) is not required but some weekend call is required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Current certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) by the NBSTSA or as a Tech in Surgery-Certified (TS-C) by the NCCT is required.

  • Basic Life Support for healthcare providers certification from either AHA, ARC or the Military Training Network is required at hire.

What You Will Do:

  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills to competently care for all assigned age groups (Neonate, Child, Adolescent, Adult, and Geriatric as applicable).

  • Demonstrates compliance with hospital safety policies and procedures.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of cautery safety (grounding pad and cautery use during procedure).

  • Recognizes breaks in aseptic technique and takes immediate corrective action.

  • Demonstrates equipment checks to assure proper functioning.

  • Updates and reviews surgeon preference cards.

  • Able to gown and glove other members of the perioperative 'sterile' team.

  • Able to gown and glove self through use of closed and open method.

  • Able to independently function in at least one other specialty area.

  • Anticipates and prioritizes surgeon needs. Communicates with RN Circulator to obtain needed resources. LPNs may function under the Nurse Practice Action with RN supervision.

  • Responsible for technical equipment and supplies (e.g., inventory, usage, organization, maintenance in own specialty area).

  • Trouble-shoots equipment within own specialty to bring to resolution.

  • Independently manages instrument, sponge and sharp counts for all procedures in specialty areas and all procedures assigned outside of specialty.

  • Assists and/or follows direction of the RN Circulator to set up a room and obtain equipment, etc.

  • Entry level with completion of a Certified Surgical Tech program.
