Our Rail business designs and delivers solutions for railway infrastructure throughout the world with teams based in offices across the UK, India and Serbia. We work from early development through the entire project lifecycle and our capability encompasses single discipline renewals, nationally significant infrastructure projects and everything in between.

A bit about the role:

Our Rail Client Advisory and Engineering Services group within the Rail business is seeking a proactive client focused Engineering Project Director to join our growing Client Engineering service. This role will be a client facing role, you will be required to be agile and responsive to address client needs, proactively identify resourcing and capability solutions to problems they recognise and those they don’t yet know they have.

In this role you will be expected to have face to face involvement with our clients and proactively lead our Client Engineering services across our ASPRO and client services frameworks. In doing so you will be required to build relationships across WSP business to fulfil our client capability needs. As project director you will be responsible for the overall delivery and commercial management of the projects. You will work with an internal project manager, WSP finance teams, and our PMO team to manage the project performance and contracts.

You will also have people management responsibilities as our Client Engineering service grow. You will support the recruitment of and day to day management of WSP client engineering resources. You will also have a role in engaging and managing a supply chain of sub-consultant and contractors as part of our service delivery to our clients.

Our Rail Client Engineering Services team helps our clients assure the railway is safe and reliable, whilst deploying resources into client engineering organisation to help solve the most complex rail transportation problems. In doing so we proactively work with our clients to continuously improve and deliver critical client engineering roles in a cost-effective way. To do so you will be expected to challenge the norm and have a drive to develop and instill the right proactive behaviours across all project resources.

  • As a Client Engineering Project Director, you’ll be used to facing a wide range of technical, commercial, people and other challenges across business and project activities. The role has a series of core responsibilities which are broadly as follows:

  • Managing key relationship with our clients, engaging with them on a regular face to face basis to understand their needs

  • Managing the performance of our client engineering projects, our people delivering the service and carrying out internal project Project Director role

  • Engaging with the internal WSP and external supply chains to identify the right resources and capabilities to satisfy our client needs

  • Managing the internal commercial performance of our projects and frameworks, working with WSP project managers, finance teams and PMO

  • Responding agilely to client requests, tender enquiries, and mini competitions

  • Manage and contribute to the technical and commercial development of tender responses

  • Managing WSP staff and contingent workers

  • In addition, you will be passionate about people development, and support the development of advisors, engineers and leaders coming through the business.

  • You’ll be passionate, engaging, energetic and articulate when bringing diverse, multi-disciplinary teams together to address the range of challenges our clients face. You’ll also understand the importance of implementing robust systems and processes to ensure that our bid and projects deliver value for money in achieving client goals and requirements as well as and cost and programme targets.

  • A proven track record in building and managing client relationships, with a network of contacts in the rail industry.

  • A professionally qualified engineering or project management background

  • Experience in managing and or delivering client-side engineering roles, with a background in rail

  • A proven track record in managing projects.

  • A natural drive to exceed client expectations.

  • An ability to listen and be proactive in responding to client needs.

  • A desire to constantly improve, motivate and encourage others.

  • A forward-thinking mindset, capable of visualising and planning for the longer term.

  • Experience in people management and development.

  • A desire to develop and secure opportunities through active business development and work winning activities.
