What You'll Be Doing

Job Summary

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Design and Engineering: Develop complete control system designs, including automation system architecture, control system installation specifications, and preliminary designs. Ensure designs are user-friendly, maintainable, and meet client expectations.

  • Project Management: Operate as a technical lead or team member on projects, producing estimates, coordinating with staff, and managing scope and design changes.

  • Technical Guidance: Mentor junior engineers and specialists, providing technical guidance and ensuring adherence to department standards.

  • Field Work: Provide on-site assistance during startup and gather data for control system configurations.

  • Documentation: Review and check vendor and fabrication drawings, create accurate installation documents, and develop work sharing packages.

  • Collaboration: Consult with design leaders from other disciplines, advising on design or scope changes, and ensuring smooth project completion.

Ideal Background

Education:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemical, Electrical, or Computer Engineering from an accredited university.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 6 years in controls and automation engineering.

  • Proven experience with design, implementation, testing, and commissioning of automation projects.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Standards and Protocols: Familiarity with ISA S88 programming standards, IEC 61131 programming languages, OSHA 1910.119, and equipment specifications.

  • Systems Knowledge: Experience with DCS, PLC, HMI, SIS systems, and knowledge of at least one specific system from the provided required, ideal, and bonus list below.

  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in creating control system installation specifications, understanding PFDs, P&IDs, instrument loop sheets, TCP/IP networking, and troubleshooting.

  • Software and Tools: Proficient in Microsoft Office, and familiarity with CAD software, command line interfaces, and network security.

  • Additional Skills: Knowledge of Modbus protocols, Ethernet, LAN/WAN systems, and experience with Windows Domains/Active Directory, virtual machines, and asset management systems.

Registration:

  • Professional Engineer (PE) registration is highly preferred.

Personal Attributes:

  • Leadership: Ability to lead a team, deliver presentations, and develop design criteria and scope of work.

  • Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Problem-Solving: Ability to troubleshoot field issues, software problems, and network problems using various techniques and tools.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit, stand, or walk for extended periods.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with command line interfaces, Windows Active Directory, virtual machines, and network security.

  • Knowledge of Modbus protocols, Ethernet/LAN/WAN systems, and CAD software.

This role requires a robust mix of technical proficiency, leadership, and effective communication to ensure successful project execution and client satisfaction.
