Innovation Associates, Inc. IT Intern in Binghamton, New York

The Role

The Information Services team is seeking a motivated and dedicated IT Intern to join our Information Technology department and gain hands-on experience in Helpdesk, Infrastructure, and Security disciplines. As an IT Intern, you will have the opportunity to contribute to various projects and tasks related to user support, system administration, network management, and cybersecurity. This internship is designed to provide valuable exposure to real-world IT operations, enhance technical skills, and foster a deep understanding of IT best practices.

The iA Intern Program is from Tuesday May 27, 2025 to Friday August 1, 2025.

What you’ll do:

This job description is not totally inclusive of all the job functions required of the IT Intern. An employee assigned to this role may have additional, job-related duties.

  • Assist end-users with technical issues, troubleshooting hardware and software problems, and providing timely resolutions.

  • Follow up before and after resolution to ensure issues are resolved.

  • Document and track support requests in the ticketing system, ensuring accurate and detailed information.

  • Collaborate with the IT team to develop user guides, FAQs, and self-help resources to empower users.

  • Build, configure, and maintain laptops, PCs, and other IT assets in a multi-site Windows environment.

  • Participate in maintaining and upgrading the organization's IT infrastructure, including servers, network devices, and hardware components.

  • Assist in the installation, configuration, and maintenance of operating systems and software applications.

  • Monitor system performance and proactively identify areas for improvement or optimization.

  • Follow best practice change management for configuration changes to IT systems.

  • Research solutions to enhance IT operations.

  • Monitor daily backup operations to ensure successful completion and troubleshoot any failures promptly.

  • Assist with the continuous modification of backup processes for optimal performance and storage efficiency.

  • Contribute to the implementation and maintenance of cybersecurity measures, including firewalls, antivirus, MFA/2FA, and intrusion detection systems.

  • Assist in regular security audits and vulnerability assessments, reporting findings and assisting in remediation efforts.

  • Stay informed about the latest security threats and trends to contribute to the development of effective security strategies.

  • Ensure devices interconnect securely with diverse systems including authentication servers, file servers, email servers, application servers, and administrative systems.

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of IT processes, procedures, and configurations for all Information Services teams.

  • Assist in generating reports related to system performance, security incidents, and helpdesk activity for all Information Services teams.

  • Contribute to ongoing IT projects, such as software upgrades, infrastructure enhancements, and security initiatives.

    Who you are:

  • Enrolled in a degree program related to Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field.

  • Basic understanding of IT principles, including hardware, software, networking, and cybersecurity.

  • Enjoys problem solving and helping others.

  • High attention to detail.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and an eagerness to learn new technologies.

  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

It would be great if you also have:

  • Relevant certifications (e.g., CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+) are a plus.

  • Knowledge regarding scripting languages

  • Increase efficiency through automation.

  • Experience with Windows 10 and Windows Server operating systems

  • Experience with virtualization technologies (VMware ESXi, Hyper-V, etc.)

  • Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures of Systems and Network Administration.

Compensation:

The estimated hourly rate range for this position is $18 to $26 per hour, though a candidate's hourly rate shall be determined on a range of factors, including, but not limited to, qualifications and experience.
