Volkswagen has a new opening on their Desktop Engineering/Linux Engineering team and is looking to add an expert level engineer. This would be a new role on their team to assist with high end users sitting on the West Coast. Most of these individuals are focused on mobility & engineering initiatives for VW and will be requiring Linux & Ubuntu based devices with very high end modifications (IE: Graphics card, processors, chips, and other hardware modifications) that can perform the data intensive functions for their jobs. This person will work as part of a smaller Desktop Engineering team that will be tasked with creating a new standard for Ubuntu loads from scratch as well as modify that image as needed and provide continued support. Based on that new standard for the OS load they will also need ensure that any hardware modifications or changes can be Ubuntu certified to perform to expectation. Given that it's not a basic Windows device not all hardware mods will be compatible and this person would be ensuring that it can be Ubuntu certified to work properly prior to deploying the machine out to the engineers on the West Coast. Once those machines are Ubuntu certified they are provided extended support, security, and peace of mind to know the machine will perform at expectations and not be a risk to the organization. Ideally this role will be on site 3 days per week in either Belmont, CA or their technical center in San Jose, CA. 2 Days remote

Additional Skills & Qualifications:

Technology and Skills required for the role: - Extensive high end Linux/Ubuntu knowledge specifically on the desktop side. They have reviewed alot of candidates that are missing the mark as their Linux/Ubuntu experience is too focused on the Server/DC side and they aren't familiar with the Ubuntu loads and kernels. - Creating Ubuntu image from scratch and modifying as needed. - Experience with the process to get a device Ubuntu Certified is a big plus - Automation experience is a must have. They currently use Landscape which is a Cannonical product (Ubuntu), but open to someone who has experience with Ansible for automation too. - Strong scripting experience using BASH - Need to be very knowledgeable on the Kernel side of house with understanding what Linux Kernels interact with what versions of Ubuntu and in turn the hardware mods. - Will be supporting next gen AI and autonomous vehicle programs within VW so they will be working with state of the art Nvidia hardware as they look to certify and implement it into the user base for these VW customers.
