Description and Qualifications

LifeCenter Northwest (LCNW) an Organ Procurement Organization (OPO) headquartered in Bellevue, Washington, has a rare opportunity for a full-time Surgical Organ Procurement Specialist III (Procurement Surgeon). The surgeon will join our expert team of four surgical organ recovery specialists who have decades of experience in organ recovery. Our team is committed to outstanding surgical outcomes and is interested in supporting the professional development of the right candidate. The ideal candidate is one who has surgical training in the field of transplantation or surgical recovery process, is driven to work collaboratively with our transplant centers to optimize donation outcomes, is a team player, is committed to the Pacific Northwest, and embraces continuous improvement.

The Surgical Organ Recovery Specialist III (SORS III) is primarily accountable for the surgical recovery process: surgical dissection, removal, and preparation of selected donor organs for transplantation in the operative setting. As such, it is the responsibility of the SORS III to assist in efforts to increase the availability of organs for transplantation and research by providing high-quality recovery services within the LifeCenter’s service area.

Recovery and Allocation of Organs and Tissues

  • Leads and participates in the recovery of abdominal organs from brain dead and donation after circulatory death donors in compliance with local and national standards for organ transplantation.

  • Assumes primary responsibility for supervision in the donor operative room.

  • Provides advice and counsel to LCNW staff when addressing potential adverse events/reactions/outcome reports, surgical errors, potential disease transmissions, or complaints that are medical in nature, have potential medical consequences, or that may affect the safety of recovered organs

  • Mediates disputes between recovery and/or transplant surgeons and programs, including real-time consultations.

  • Assists and advise in the allocation of organs with transplant programs.

  • Provides direction on organ perfusion and preservation of organs for transplant.

  • Ensures timely, complete, and accurate documentation for all appropriate surgical donation-related materials, i.e., donor chart.

    Development

  • Collaborates internally and externally with others to develop and promote practices that increase the number or organs recovered for transplantation and for research.

  • Ensures a respectful and collaborative professional working relationship with all colleagues, ensuring a team approach for the success of LCNW.

  • Participates in the Clinical Advisory Committee meetings and associated subcommittee meetings as available.

  • In conjunction with LCNW staff, review data regarding organ utilization with designated transplant centers; recommend changes in practice when necessary to increase utilization and ensure protocols are consistent with the current standards of practice.

  • Pursues professional development activities that provide continued growth, expertise, and maintenance of professional skills.

    Schedule and Travel Requirements

  • 24/7 on-call coverage for up to 36 weeks per year, including weekends, nights, and holidays. This would include primary and secondary call coverage.

  • Travel is essential to this position; consequently, the employee must be prepared to travel by personal automobile and charter and commercial aircraft within and outside the LCNW’s designated service area which includes Alaska, Montana, Northern Idaho, and Washington.

    Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in medicine, biology, or related life science from a four-year college or university

  • 5 years’ experience in tissue banking or organ procurement coordination

  • Advanced documented training or experience in surgical training required.

  • A minimum of 5 years of working directly in surgical field strongly preferred.

  • Requires a valid driver's license and access to an insured automobile for work-related functions at expected times.

  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination or applicable medical or religious exemption will be required as a condition of employment upon offer. For those that need to complete the vaccination series, start dates will be adjusted.

The pay range for this role is $267,200 - $400,800. Where a candidate’s compensation falls within this range is based on several bona fide factors such as experience, tenure, and other specialized knowledge.
