Scope of Position:

This position is the first impression of The Salvation Army for staff, guests, and clients and therefore, requires a positive, calm, welcoming demeanor and cooperative attitude demonstrating excellent people skills at all times. The employee will greet and record all guests entering in and calling the facility with professionalism and courtesy. All employees must work within the policies and procedures of, The Salvation Army, The Veterans Administration, and The Salvation Army Veterans and Family Center as well as extreme confidentiality (regulated by HiPPA compliance). Excellent written and verbal communication in a professional manner is a must in all interpersonal relations.

The individual hired for this position cannot participate in any form of substance abuse or show evidence of use while present on Salvation Army property.

Knowledge Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Must be a cooperative member of a team and encourage clients and guests to do the same.

  • Position requires consistent attendance, accuracy, and timeliness in completion of tasks.

  • Working knowledge of office equipment, telephone, fax, copier, and computer a must.

  • Communicate in written and verbal communication effectively.

  • Must possess the self-discipline necessary to perform repetitive tasks without lowering quality of work.

  • Ability to follow directions and complete daily tasks while maintaining a flexible yet self-motivated schedule.

  • Ability to address multiple projects in a time-sensitive manner.

  • Ability to communicate critical information accurately during stressful crisis moments.

  • Ability to receive and follow directions.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Monitor safety and security of the facility and clients using the cameras and locked entries.

  • Familiarize yourself with client/house rules, Salvation Army Policy, and Front Desk procedures.

  • Maintain files and information in an appropriate manner.

  • Maintain key security and distribute keys as necessary.

  • Receive and route inquiries, messages, and communication forms as appropriate.

  • Refer clients to appropriate staff when they present a need.

  • Maintain front desk paperwork including Daily Register, Sign In/Out, Curfew/AWOL, etc.

  • Must remain awake and alert at all times for the safety and security of the facility and clients.

  • Assist the intake of new clients.

  • Maintain the front desk in a neat, clean, orderly, and professional manner.

  • Assist with scheduling as needed.

  • Report all concerns and incidents to supervisor or appropriate staff.

  • Attend Team Meetings when scheduled.

  • Conduct & record BA testing using Breathalyzer.

  • Observe, record and report Urinalysis testing as assigned.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions:

The front desk is the hub of the facility, and the worker will need to be alert and ready to accomplish multiple tasks and projects at once with interruptions and noise from ringing telephones, printers, copiers, walk -in traffic, multiple deadlines, and competing priorities. Frequent phone and in-person contact with people from diverse backgrounds who may be angry, hostile, confused, or frustrated is common.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hand to finger, hand, or feel objects, tools, or controls; to talk or hear; reach with hands and arms; stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or sometimes continuous basis. Must occasionally lift and move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision. Occasionally work outdoors and sometimes in inclement weather.

Miscellaneous:

Education & Experience:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.

  • Education and/or work experience commensurate with the duties and responsibilities required.

  • Experience with diverse populations including Veterans, shelter clients and people experiencing homelessness.

  • Crisis intervention and non-violent mediation skills a plus.
