Job Duties:

The primary focus of this position is to assist the Plant Coordinator and/or Project supervisor under general supervision by performing Quality Assurance in sampling and testing materials/ and monitoring Quality Control testing and production of bituminous and concrete mixes produced for MnDOT projects to ensure that they meet the required project specifications. This position may also perform daily assigned contract administration work, such as testing and project documentation.

Examples of work for this specific vacancy include but are not limited to:

  • Monitors concrete and bituminous plants to ensure materials meet specifications and requirements.

  • To serve as a Quality Assurance Inspector for both Bituminous and Concrete Plants.

  • Collect and submit all necessary bituminous, concrete, and aggregate samples.

  • Contract Administration (Road & Bridge Construction). Complete needed tasks on construction projects so that assigned projects are constructed in accordance with the intent of the plans, specifications, and special provisions.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Certifications required at the time of hire: Aggregate Production, Level 1 Bituminous Plant and Level 1 Concrete Plant.

  • Ability to obtain Level 2 Bituminous Plant and Level 2 Concrete Plant within 12 months of hire.

  • Valid Class D drivers license.

Exam Part 1: The level of experience to perform this job at the Transportation Generalist Senior level can be achieved with:

  • Two years of experience performing contract administration (concrete and bituminous plant inspection) activities or related activities;

OR

  • A combination of one year of experience in any of the following areas may substitute for one year of performing contract administration (concrete and bituminous plant inspection) activities: bridge maintenance, bridge safety inspection, contract administration (roadway and/or bridge construction), design, hydraulics, materials, soils, permits, planning, predesign, right of way, road surface/roadside maintenance, signs, surveys, snow/ice, and/or traffic engineering.

  • Note:A Two year Civil or Construction Technology Degree or the following four year degrees:Architectural, Civil or Mechanical Engineering; Land Surveying / Geomatics; or equivalent may substitute for one year of experience. (In order for education coursework to be considered in lieu of work experience you must submit a copy of your transcripts).

  • Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.

Exam Part 2: Applicants that are made a contingent job offer will be invited to take a computerized Math and Reading Assessment Test. The required passing score for the Math portion is a level 5 or higher and the Reading portion is a level 5 or higher. (Acceptance of the offer is contingent on passing a math and reading assessment test.) If you’ve previously taken and passed the math and reading assessments, you may be exempt from retesting. Please check with your district HR office.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous MnDOT experience working as a Laborer, Transportation Associate or Transportation Generalist

  • Aggregate Production, Level 2 Bituminous Plant, and/or Level 2 Concrete Plant.

Physical Requirements

A pre-placement physical examination is required for this position. Current employees who have successfully bid or are moving into specific job classifications will be required to complete the pre-employment physical exam. The scope of the physical exam will be limited to whether the employee can safely and effectively perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, in compliance with state and federal law.
