About this position:

This position processes and verifies the LiDAR system data entry, will work with complex LiDAR and Photography data for the Location and Survey Section as part of the Statewide Topographic mapping and other department needs such as court exhibits and drainage mapping. Is also responsible for computing and analyzing data as collected by the department or consultant's LiDAR units. Reviews the data for accuracy and prepares it for further use in the statewide mapping program as well as for drainage mapping and court exhibits. This position is also required to operate the LiDAR system as well as the digital aerial camera system for the department and includes making and reviewing flight planning for the collection of data.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A baccalaureate degree with twelve semester hours in any combination of GIS or GIS-related courses such as remote sensing, cartography, spatial analysis, mapping science, civil surveying, photogrammetry, CADD (computer aided drafting and design) mapping, aerial photo interpretation, physical geography, web mapping, and/or computer science courses related to geographic information systems.

SUBSTITUTIONS:

Six months of experience (including college undergraduate student work) in digital mapping technology such as GIS, computer cartography, civil CADD, or digital cadastral mapping will substitute for the required twelve semester hours of specialized course work only.

Two years of experience (including college undergraduate student work) in digital mapping technology such as GIS, computer cartography, civil CADD, or digital cadastral mapping will substitute for the required degree and the twelve semester hours of specialized course work.

NOTE:

Civil CADD (Computer Aided Drafting and Design) is digital survey mapping for Civil Engineering functions.

NOTE:

Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university.

Job Concepts

FUNCTION OF WORK:

To perform geographic mapping services in support of a GIS program or project.

LEVEL OF WORK:

Entry.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Direct from a GIS Supervisor. May receive supervision from higher-level personnel.

LOCATION OF WORK:

May be used by all state agencies.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:

Differs from GIS Analyst 2 by the absence of independent GIS analysis work of moderate complexity.

Examples of Work

This position processes and verifies the LiDAR system data entry, will work with complex LiDAR and Photography data for the Location and Survey Section as part of the Statewide Topographic mapping and other department needs such as court exhibits and drainage mapping. Is also responsible for computing and analyzing data as collected by the department or consultant's LiDAR units. Reviews the data for accuracy and prepares it for further use in the statewide mapping program as well as for drainage mapping and court exhibits. This position is also required to operate the LiDAR system as well as the digital aerial camera system for the department and includes making and reviewing flight planning for the collection of data.

60% Collects data by flying in the Department's airplane and operating the camera used for collecting aerial photography. Also, takes raw LiDAR data and processes it through post processing software to combine raw data with GPS data and Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) data to produce geo-referenced LiDAR files. The incumbent also identifies data voids and verifies data sets covering the entire project extents, generates LAS files by merging GPS, IMU and LiDAR data via software packages, validates and adjusts relative accuracy for adjacent flight lines, shifts LiDAR point cloud points to match ground control points, classifies point cloud data as determined by appropriate software.

20% Utilizes department software to process LiDAR and aerial photography data for the department, the statewide topographic mapping program and for court exhibits.

10% Utilizes department software to prepare for the collection of LiDAR data for the statewide mapping program as well as other tasks as required by the department for the statewide mapping program.

5% Utilizes department software to set up flight mission planning for drainage mapping and topographic mapping for the department.

5% May be required to perform other duties as necessary, including, but not limited to, emergency/disaster support activities.
