Your Specific Responsibilities:

The incumbent if part of a global public health organization and is expected to support the Florida Department of Health in Polk County in its mission to protect, promote, and improve the health of all people in Florida through integrated state, county and community efforts and its vision to be the Healthiest State in the Nation. Furthermore, the incumbent is expected to incorporate the agency values ofInnovation, Collaboration, Accountability, Responsiveness and Excellencein all aspects of their work.

This position primarily works in the Specialty Care Clinic Laboratory, collecting blood and other specimens for clients with HIV, Hepatitis, and/or STIs. This position performs other tasks as directed by the Senior Community Health Nursing Supervisor.

  • Provides HIV pre and post-test counseling per 500/501 and DOH requirements.

  • Documents the risk infection and pre and post-test counseling according to current protocols.

  • Reports all post-test counseling on HIV positive patients and their contacts to the STD Program according to current protocols.

  • Completes required counseling/interview forms, investigative forms, reports and other paperwork.

  • Draws blood and collects other specimens for patients in the clinic utilizing established procedures.

  • Ensures lab is kept clean and in working order.

  • Processes and packs all specimens for pickup and shipping to external laboratories.

  • Performs quality control testing and keeps temperature logs as required.

  • Prepares records and reports required by program components.

  • Works with Quest Diagnostics, LabCorp, and Bureau of Public Health Laboratories via email, phone, or in-person visits from lab representatives.

  • Maintains strict confidentiality and professional communication at all times.

  • Assists with updating patient records as required in HMS and monitoring HMS follow-up list.

  • Provides HIV education materials, including pamphlets and condoms to clients.

  • Assists with follow-up on patients missing lab appointments, including letters and/or telephone calls.

  • Assists with answering incoming calls and directs calls for appropriate action.

  • Collaborates and troubleshoots issues with other DOH Polk Lab staff as needed.

  • Completes all required education, including in-person education that may be off-site.

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of methods of compiling, organizing and analyzing data.

  • Ability to conduct fact-finding interviews.

  • Ability to conduct health investigations.

  • Ability to analyze data.

  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work activities.

  • Ability to prepare records and reports.

  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.

    Qualifications:

  • Current Certification as a CNA, MA or Phlebotomy.

  • 2 years experience in drawing blood and processing specimens for a lab company.

  • 1-year experience in a healthcare setting.

  • 1-year experience with EHR and electronic lab ordering systems.

    Emergency Duty:Incumbent may be required to work before, during and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency. Emergency duty required of the incumbent includes working in special needs or Red Cross shelters, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural.
