National Park Service Maintenance Worker in Bar Harbor, Maine

Summary Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. Annually, you will work from approximately March-November, and you will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year. Responsibilities Repair and replace wood shingles, tile and slate roofs, composition and metal roofs, plumbing systems, sheetrock, plaster, paneling, studs, plywood, doors, windows, walls, ceilings, siding, flooring, and finish work. Use skills in rough and finished carpentry, roofing, sheet rock installation and finishing, plaster repairs, and painting of facilities. Perform plumbing on water tanks and floats, portable and wastewater systems and related equipment such as mains, valves, storage tanks, fittings, sinks, toilets and fixtures. Use a variety of hand tools and power equipment, including table and hand saws, drill presses, planers, jointers, sanders, dust collection, and pneumatic nail guns. Operate tractors and snowblowers and performs other tasks related to snow and ice removal. Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. You may be required to work weekends and overtime. If you are a new employee in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period. Ability to do The Work of the Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (SCREEN OUT): experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the full range of Maintenance Worker tasks in at least two of the following trades assisting journeymen or other higher graded maintenance workers: Carpentry (constructs, installs, repairs and replace items such as doors, shelves, etc.); Painting (preparing surfaces, determine painting materials to be used and method of application, and painting a variety of surfaces); Plumbing (replace various valves, unions, elbows, fixtures, toilets, faucets and various types of pipe and copper lines, cut and thread pipes, winterize water systems, etc.); Roofing (repairs and patching, tar and paper, metal foam roofs and asphalt shingles); Wastewater Plant Operator (monitoring equipment and gauges, performing routine tests, recording the results in reports, collecting samples, adjusting the rate of flow and amounts of chemicals to be used; Water Plant Operator (monitoring pumping equipment, regulating water, reading meters gauges and charts, recording readings and preparing reports). Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Education There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions. Additional Information A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. Physical Demands: Physical effort is heavy to moderate, and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50 pounds, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand while working, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend, stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions. Working Conditions: Exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors (temperatures -40 to 90+ degrees). Subject to danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding. Exposed to dust, dirt, wind, and rain. May work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment; paints, solvents, etc. May be exposed to electrical shocks, and biting insects. It is 50 miles southeast of Bangor, Maine, and 240 miles northeast of Boston, Massachusetts. Acadia National Park protects a landscape of rare scenic beauty. Acadia's mountains are the highest rocky headlands on the Atlantic shore of the United States, and the vistas from these mountaintops encompass forested woodlands, shimmering lakes, quiet marshes, bold rocky shores, and coastal islands. The ocean strongly influences the park's character. Visitation exceeds two million visitors annually, with the highest visitation occurring in July and August. The Schoodic Peninsula portion of Acadia National Park is about an hour drive from Bar Harbor, Maine. Located in Winter Harbor, Maine, the Schoodic Peninsula is the only part of Acadia National Park found on the mainland and experiences less visitation than Bar Harbor, Maine. The peninsula contains numerous hiking trails, biking paths, a scenic loop road, and the iconic Schoodic Point. The Schoodic Peninsula is home to the Schoodic Education and Research Center (SERC), the research partner of Acadia National Park.
