Johns Hopkins University Sr. Financial Analyst in Baltimore, Maryland

We are seeking a Sr. Financial Analyst who will manage and process financial transactions involving clinical, joint agreement funds, general funds, federal and/or private grants and contracts, and gift and discretionary accounts for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Leads the development of the annual divisional budgets / assisting variance reporting. Responsible for overseeing established budgets by overseeing loading of budget, reconciling budget information and changes, and extracting and analyzing financial data to manage financials of division. Generates monthly financial reports and monitors revenues and expenditures for various business lines, including, but not limited to clinical funds, designated and discretionary funds, affiliated institution funds and general funds against divisional budget. Performs comprehensive financial analysis relating to business or research trends to improve divisional financial effectiveness and complies with JHU, JHH and/or agency regulations and restrictions. This position will also have responsibility for sponsored post award. This position reports to the Assistant Administrator.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Interpret and analyze departmental financial reports (GAAP reports, etc.), and identify over expenditures and communicate information to Assistant Administrator.

  • Assist with the departmental budget preparation and central school requirements.

  • Maintain broad understanding of the financial positions/conditions of the various divisions throughout the Department.

  • Monitors and approves departmental expenditures, as assigned, throughout the fiscal year (and in respect to processing deadlines), with both authority and confidence to filter appropriate expenses.

  • This includes SAP, Concur, PCARD, and Petty Cash.As necessary, ensure monthly financial transactions are processed and posted.

  • Includes, but is not limited to, KB 15N's, journal entries and cost transfers for both JHU and JHBMC/JHH (as applicable).

  • Regularly meets with and serves as a go-to finance resource for departmental staff.

  • Manage the sponsored post award duties such as account maintenance and oversight, billing/invoicing, reporting, compliance and closeout.

  • Prepares and processes payroll documents needed to reduce control salary within designated areas assigned.

  • Completes monthly reconciliations on designated areas within the department.

  • Monitors and processes transactions to correct default accounts.

  • Build, maintain, and onboard/train new and current financial positions within OB/GYN under guidance of Financial Project Manager leadership.

  • Creating content involving SAP, MedVitals, Excel, Concur, PCARD, Petty Cash, and other identified non-sponsored financial needs.

  • Leads variance reporting in SAP, MedVitals, and Excel to identify changes in charges, faculty gaps, affiliated revenue, and all other financial KPIs in the division.

  • Will be the subject matter expert in finance for SAP.

  • Assimilates information from various sources to draw conclusions, to effect change in processes, procedures, and reporting, and/or theorize downstream impacts.

  • Defines problems, collects data, establishes facts and draws conclusions with direction (as necessary from others).

  • Must be able to independently interpret technical and detailed guidelines, policies and procedures, as well as explain or describe moderately complex information and presentation materials.

  • Plan and conduct complex studies to determine the cost of business for departmental clinical programs.

  • Analyze results and recommend necessary budget adjustments, and cost-effective measures to the appropriate and applicable members of the DOM administration team and/or division management.

  • Analyze complex financial data and extract and define relevant information using the various accounting systems and communicate necessary information to applicable members of the OB/GYN administration team and/or division management.

  • Interpret data to determine fiscal year performance and project future financial trends.

  • Analyze and interpret fiscal patterns to project future expenditures and revenue streams.

  • Perform complex statistical, cost, and financial analysis of data reported in the various accounting systems.

  • Identifies weak or non-existent administrative processes and works with leadership to develop corrective action plans.

  • Performs financial analysis and reviews procedures and systems to determine appropriate solutions.

  • Develop and oversee/coordinate changes to the departmental budget and JHU divisional reprojection models.

  • Direct the departmental budget and reprojection preparation processes.

  • Responsible for completing budget for designated cost centers and/or internal orders.

  • Lead in the development and review of business plans prepared by department management.

  • Provides explanations to variances in a concise manner.

  • Develop and maintain financial reports to aid in the development and management of clinical, joint agreement funds, general funds, and gift and discretionary funds budgets.

  • Develop and/or assist in the development of variance analysis tools.

  • Develop complex financial reports for forecasting and trending to assist department leadership in developing business plans for new and existing clinical and/or research programs within the department.

  • Provide reports to designated individuals on budget vs. actual performance for the entire Department of OB/GYN.

  • Ensures faculty and staff are charged to correct funding source relative to salary expense coverage.

  • Applies knowledge of procedures to review and record personnel activities of individuals compensated through various funding sources (Clinical, sponsored, etc.)

  • Lead and coordinate the Time and Effort reporting for faculty and staff.

  • Assist in verifying payroll forms, (Electronic & Paper), for completeness and compliance with JHU policies.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Requires excellent knowledge of accounting and payroll principles and record keeping, and strong analytical skills and problem-solving abilities.

  • Exchanges non-routine information using tact and persuasion as appropriate requiring good oral and written communication skills.

  • Functions as a team player and works to maintain harmonious working relationships with coworkers, peers and supervisors.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business or related field.

  • Five years progressively responsible related financial/accounting experience.

  • Additional education (Master's in a related field) may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
