Space Telescope Science Institute Senior Cloud Software Developer in Baltimore, Maryland

Description

The Data Management Division (DMD) is seeking an experienced Senior Cloud Software Developer with expertise in cloud-native application development, cloud infrastructure management and in containerization and Kubernetes, to help design and develop on-line platforms, software tools, and data processing pipelines.

This position can support hybrid work. Candidates must reside in or be willing to relocate to our local market. (MD, DE, VA, PA, DC & WV).

This position requires US Citizenship or Permanent Residence in order to meet ITAR requirements.

The annual salary range for this senior level role is $130,000 - $150,000. The posted salary range represents a general guideline; however, STScI considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers, such as internal pay equity, the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's experience, education, and skill, and current market conditions.

The Role

The team leads the development of data management platforms to support the science of the astronomy community and development of data pipelines to support the Roman Space Telescope.

You will work in a cloud computing environment to maintain STScI’s position as a world leader in the development of high-quality software and science ready data products for astronomy to support astronomers around the world. You will work with a team of software developers and astronomers to deliver critical science products and data processing tools.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop scalable, reliable, and secure AWS native cloud applications

  • Develop infrastructure configuration as IaC using technologies such as Terraform, CloudFormation, etc.

  • Develop systems for the pipeline processing of astronomical data

  • Implement CI/CD/CT pipelines to build, deploy, and test native cloud application code

Experience, Skills & Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Software Engineering or a relevant field with a minimum of 8 years working experience in an AWS Cloud environment required for a senior level position.

  • Expertise in cloud-native application development, and cloud infrastructure management.

  • Expertise in containerization and Kubernetes

  • In-depth knowledge of AWS services (EC2, Lambda, DynamoDB, RDS, S3, API Gateway)

  • Strong experience with AWS and proficiency in Python, Java, BASH, and IaC tools like Terraform and CloudFormation

  • Strong experience with relational and cloud-based databases

  • Proficient in building automation tools and CI/CD/CT pipelines using platforms like Ansible, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, and CodePipeline
