Johns Hopkins University Research Specialist II in Baltimore, Maryland

The Huang laboratory in the Biophysics Department of the Johns Hopkins Krieger School of Arts and Sciences is looking for a highly motivated Research Specialist II who is enthusiastic about solving problems in signal transduction at the quantitative level. The successful candidate will contribute expertise in protein biochemistry to reconstitute membrane signaling reactions. If necessary, the candidate will receive training in quantitative methods. We anticipate the successful candidate will collaborate with lab members on a range of projects, with the possibility of being a lead contributor. Efforts will be recognized by the authorship of research articles. This position is well-suited for candidates with long-term dedication as well as individuals seeking higher education.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Will recombinantly express and purify membrane and membrane-associated proteins and perform basic biochemical characterizations to verify the purification quality

  • Be able to express and purify proteins independently.

  • Reconstitute biochemical reactions on membranes using purified components and perform quantitative measurements, which can be pursued either independently or with lab members.

  • Participate in training in membrane manipulation and quantitative microscopy.

  • May assist in teaching & training lab members in protein biochemistry.

  • Document all experiments in a laboratory journal.

  • Will help maintain laboratory equipment, reagents, and overall lab organization regarding research projects.

  • Talk about project development in detail and regularly with your supervisor.

Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Experience with protein expression, purification, and characterizations.

  • Experience in lab management.

  • Must be a team player, highly collaborative, and enthusiastic about working with lab members on multiple projects.

  • Must be self-motivated, responsible, and organized.

  • Must use scientific knowledge and lab experience to make judgments and decisions.

  • Ability to work independently and productively is essential.

Level of Independent Decision Making

  • The Research Specialist II is expected to make decisions independently about strategies to purify protein constructs and characterize purification quality.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.

  • Two years laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.

  • Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with protein mutagenesis, expression, and purification would be strongly preferred.

  • Experience with any of the following is a plus, but not required: membrane reconstitution, cell extracts, cell biology, single-molecule imaging, quantitative microscopy, and any lab management experience.

Starting Salary Range: $41,300 - $72,300 Annually (Commensurate with experience)
