Johns Hopkins University Research Assistant in Baltimore, Maryland

Housing mobility programs are designed to address systemic discrimination in the housing market by helping low-income families move from areas of concentrated poverty into lower poverty neighborhoods, dramatically changing multiple social determinants of health. The Mobility Asthma Project (MAP) recruited a sample of 140 children with asthma who moved through a housing program. MAP is designed to assess whether moving led to sustained improvements in their asthma and if this was due to changes in their environmental exposures. Under general supervision, we are seeking a Research Assistant (RA) for the Mobility Asthma Program (MAP) supports the research program with study data collection and organization. The range of duties includes, but is not limited to patient interviews, data collection, data entry (scanning and verifying collected data for accuracy), organizing collected information; records management, and communicating with team members on the status of project. The RA will work to recruit, screen, consent and enroll interested families.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • General knowledge of the research and applies basic analytical skills to administer assigned projects, and to identify situations requiring special attention.

  • Conduct routine, in-home, patient interviews requiring some weekday flexibility (8:30 a-5:00 p, 9:00 a-5:30 p, 10:00 a-6:30 p, or 11:00 a-7:30 p) and possibly an occasional Saturday workday.

  • Prepare air pumps for home deployment and weigh dust filters upon return.

  • Screen and assess eligibility criteria for potential study volunteers at the housing mobility program’s office and by phone, explain study procedures and obtain consent, coordinate/schedule patient follow-up appointments.

  • Collect data from patient medical records and questionnaires administered in visits and participant’s homes and by phone.

  • Prepare and code data entry, enter and maintain databases. Monitors data quality and accuracy as required by research protocol. May run pre-established routine queries.

  • Act as primary contact for study participants, which may include scheduling, confirming appointments.

  • Implementing processes for ensuring data collection occurs in an effective and efficient manner, such as tracking study visits to ensure appropriate visit interval and visit flow.

  • Ensure that case files and accompanying paperwork are organized and current.

  • May perform routine clinical procedures, e.g. height, weight, etc.

  • Data management including data tracking and cleaning to ensure accuracy of data, creating summary statistics, and creating and revising tables for use in presentations and publications.

  • May conduct literature searches to support faculty in research efforts. May help design and format papers/publications.

  • Clerical and other duties as assigned.

  • May interview research assistants and lead training activities such as data collection, data entry, and sample processing procedures.

  • We will train the RA to conduct home assessments including environmental air monitoring and dust sampling; perform clinical measures of pulmonary function (spirometry and exhaled nitric oxide); collect urine and microbiome samples, perform blood draws with participants ages 5-17 and provide participants education on strategies designed to reduce allergens in their homes.

Requirements

  • Travel to locations on/off campus including participant homes and partner organization housing mobility program office. Access to own vehicle strongly preferred.

  • Flexible schedule including some evenings as stated above and occasional weekend hours (no more than possibility 1 day per 2-3 months).

  • Generalized knowledge of research and ability to apply basic analytical skills.

  • Good communication and written skills.

  • Works well with others.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related discipline.

  • Additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
