Johns Hopkins University Quality Assurance & Safety Coordinator in Baltimore, Maryland

We are seeking a Quality Assurance & Safety Coordinator who will work as part of our mission to serve food safely and will work under the guidance of the Safety and Sanitation manager to help support a culture where safe food handling and sanitation practices are regularly top of mind. This position will be an hourly support role assisting the Safety & Sanitation Manager in creating safe environments and outcomes for Hopkins Dining.

This position will help deliver training programs utilizing internal programs and third-party organizations to ensure staff are appropriately certified and have adequate knowledge of proper safe food handling procedures. In addition, the position will assist in maintaining documentation to facilitate proper self-inspection practices and ensure consistent use of standard food safety forms. The ideal candidate should possess a passion for food safety and occupational safety while eager to learn how to apply compliance procedures to solidify the dining program.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Sanitation/Safety (60%)

  • Implement a food safety program for JHU Dining.

  • Assist the Safety and Sanitation manager with conducting inspections in dining facilities and collaborating with the manager to draft corrective action plans that will maintain quality control. (This position will act as an internal auditor for the food service team).

  • Ensure proper forms are being utilized in units to monitor the temperatures of equipment and foods.

  • Assist in auditing SDS (Safety Data Sheet) books in all dining units and update as needed.

  • Assist in random inspections of units and provide feedback through teaching moments to unit management as well as staff to develop corrective action plans.

  • Conduct regular unit audits and collaboratively partner with operations to identify areas of opportunity as well as maintainable corrective actions.

  • Participate in a committee of team members from each unit to serve as safety/sanitation monitors.

  • Communicate with the Occupational Health and Safety Department for incident reports and investigations.

Training (30%)

  • At the direction of the Safety and Sanitation manager assist in facilitating ServSafe food safety training certifications for all dining employees (handlers training as well as managers training).

  • Monitor existing training programs as appropriate (for example: vendor product changes, food recall protocol, and new processes such as sous vide cooking or cook/chill).

  • Assist in monitoring performance standards while keeping Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) up to date.

  • Assist in providing support to new hires with proper onboarding regarding food safety training and sanitation expectations.

  • Monitor, analyze, and report trending areas of concern as well as compliance with self-inspection expectations.

  • Develop and maintain a system to track training certifications, daily food safety and sanitation logs, monthly unit self-inspections, and other pertinent analytical data.

  • Assist in editing food safety and sanitation forms to be used across JHU Dining units including food safety inspection forms, temp logs, HACCP plans, etc.

  • Assist renewal of Baltimore City Health and other regulatory permits yearly and or as needed

  • Monitor the master calendar of annual staff food safety and sanitation training expectations to dining operations.

  • Prepare and keep all dining staff training manuals pertaining to food safety and pertinent handouts current.

Culinary, Wellness & Innovation (10%)

  • Collaborate with the Safety and Sanitation manager culinary innovation team on departmental initiatives specially related to food safety.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate’s Degree.

  • Three years of relevant experience in food service and/or training.

  • Must have obtain ServSafe Manger Certification within 60 days of hire.

  • Additional experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with PC-based Microsoft Word products (PowerPoint, Excel, Word, etc.)

  • Strong Interpersonal skills to build solid working relationships internally and externally.

  • ServSafe Certified Trainer or must be able to obtain certification within 60 days of hire.

  • Familiarity with a unionized work environment helpful.

  • Knowledge of basic principles of biology, bacteriology, chemistry & physics etc.

  • Desire to make an impact in food safety & occupational safety within a team.

  • Recent graduate of a food science program.

  • Prior experience as a food safety auditor, public health sanitarian / inspector.

Starting Salary Range: $18.20 - $33.90 HRLY ($56,650 targeted; Commensurate with experience)

Employee group: Full Time

Schedule: 5 days a week, some night/ weekend work may be required
