The Johns Hopkins Institute for Planetary Health (JHIPH) is a leading organization at the forefront of Planetary Health, a new, rapidly growing global field and social movement focused on understanding the human health impacts of our disruption and transformation of Earth's natural systems and the solutions necessary to address these challenges. Never before has humanity's footprint on the natural world been so large or so threatening to human health and well-being.

The JHIPH mission is to catalyze scholarship and practice of Planetary Health across the University; bring together a cohesive community of practice; and establish JHU as a global leader in addressing the global health and humanitarian dimensions of the Earth crisis. JHIPH also collaborates with the Planetary Health Alliance (PHA) which is a growing global consortium of over 450 institutions in more than 70 countries, and 3,500+ individual members, advancing Planetary Health understanding by convening experts; creating, gathering, and distributing educational materials; and curating, synthesizing, and disseminating evidence to inform and activate the Planetary Health community and broader society. JHIPH is seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Communications Specialist to support the JHIPH growing team in building a transdisciplinary community dedicated to advancing the field of Planetary Health.

The Communications Specialist will work in close collaboration with JHIPH's Communications Officer, JHIPH Administrative Manager, and other staff in both JHIPH and PHA to assist in building out communications infrastructure, supporting content development, managing workflow, and monitoring analytics to inform strategy and ensure the success of our mission. The Communications Specialist will officially report to the JHIPH Communications Officer.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Helping to build a powerful and recognizable brand for JHIPH across all JHU entities by ensuring communications follow brand, messaging, and editorial style guidelines.

  • Keeping an evolving assessment and awareness of trends in communications across all JHU entities (and beyond) in order to make recommendations that grow JHIPH’s reach.

  • Working with Communications Officer and internal stakeholders to build-out a robust communication’s engine for JHIPH, including: social media channels and publishing platform; email marketing templates and automations; digital asset management; and analytics dashboard; and ongoing expansion of the JHIPH website.

  • Drafting and editing copy and materials for internal and external audiences in accordance with JHIPH‘s branding, strategy, policy, and guidelines; including writing, graphics, video, and photography.

  • Coordinating with JHIPH program leads and PHA staff to identify Planetary Health stories and content opportunities for reporting, content creation, and amplification.

  • Working with Communications Officer to create and maintain an editorial calendar for communications including newsletters, emails, social media, event marketing, presentations, or other materials

  • Ensuring the highest quality of the JHIPH online presence including maintenance of the JHIPH website and all social media channels; implementation of timely updates reflecting current events, programs, initiatives, opportunities, and membership.

  • Facilitating online engagement in alignment with JHIPH‘s digital strategy across online platforms. through monitoring and response.

  • Evaluating analytics and maintaining analytics dashboard, making recommendations for strategy alignment based on tracking activity.

  • Maintaining calendars and appointments and providing relevant administrative support, including for virtual and in-person events.

  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Understanding of the established principles and concepts within public relations, strategic communication, media relations, and digital strategy.

  • Experience with a variety of social media channels, including: social media platforms including LinkedIn, X, Instagram, and Facebook.

  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, including design, video editing, and animation software, is a plus.

  • At a minimum, an understanding of branding principles and sensitivity to the aesthetics design; including typography, color choice, and image selection.

  • Knowledge, experience and/or interest and deep curiosity around global environmental change and/or public health as it relates to Planetary Health.

  • Utilization of accessible design principles and familiarity creating for multicultural, multilingual audiences.

  • Proficiency with communications software such as Mailchimp, WordPress, Project Management Tools, and Social Media Publishing Platforms.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.

  • Strong verbal and written communications skills with keen attention to details and deadlines.

  • Organizational skills and the aptitude to multitask in a fast-paced environment with multiple projects.

  • Creative and innovative self-starter.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and works collaboratively across disciplines, cultures, and geographies.

  • A positive attitude, growth mindset, and strong desire for continued learning and professional development.

  • Maintain an active role in the Johns Hopkins community as a representative and ambassador for Planetary Health.

  • This position requires exceptional organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills and the ability to build and maintain effective and positive relationships internally to JHU and externally.

  • The position is based in Baltimore and may also attend events in JHU’s new building at 555 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington DC. The position will collaborate with our internal team and global partners to support our mission.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in related field

  • Two years related experience

  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite

  • Experience with animation or video production

  • Experience managing social media channels

  • Training or prior experience in Policy, Internal Affairs, or Legal Governance.

  • Awareness of and aptitude to appropriately and effectively understand, respect, and adapt to cultural and identity-based differences within group environments.

  • Knowledge of and commitment to concepts and issues tied to social justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion.

  • Skills related to creating and supporting an environment that allows for inclusion, effective intercultural engagement and personal humility and authenticity.

Starting Salary Range: $45,700 - $80,000 annually (commensurate with experience)
