Johns Hopkins University ACUC Director, Post-Approval Monitoring in Baltimore, Maryland

Johns Hopkins University is looking to add staff to the Animal Care and Use Committee (ACUC). This office provides continual oversight of procedures performed on animals and confirms that these procedures are performed as described in protocols that are first reviewed and approved by the ACUC. Additionally, as an institution we must assess the qualifications of our researchers to conduct the experiments they propose and provide training to meet these qualifications. Post-approval monitoring (PAM) and researcher training are essential responsibilities of the ACUC. To this end, the Johns Hopkins University ACUC is seeking qualified applicants for the position of ACUC Director, Post-Approval Monitoring , with an appointment in the ACUC office, and with voting membership on the IACUC committee. Joint appointments in academic departments or divisions may be available for qualified candidates but the primary responsibilities and activities of the Director will be associated with the IACUC and ACUC Office.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Ensure animal welfare in all JHU labs and facilities.

  • Provide oversight and guidance to JHU researchers, including advice in real time as procedures are developed or implemented.

  • Work collaboratively with veterinarians and staff supporting the research animal husbandry and clinical care program.

  • Inform the ACUC office and veterinary staff of potential welfare concerns.

  • Maintain records and logs of training provided.

  • Regularly update JHU policies and guidelines for animal care and use as state and federal guidelines are refined.

  • Facilitate the exchange of information between the ACUC, Institutional Official (IO) and attending veterinarians regarding best practices and welfare concerns.

  • Voting member of the IACUC.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the behavior, biology, and husbandry of laboratory animals.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.

  • Ability to work in a collaborative and flexible team environment.

  • Strong organizational skills, attention to details, analytical and problem-solving ability.

  • Ability to make independent judgments and to act on decisions daily.

  • Ability to work with flexibility on several tasks simultaneously and to meet various concurrent deadlines.

  • Track record of scholarly activity or project development, implementation and outcome assessment.

  • A track record of successful training of faculty, students, and staff is also expected.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or PhD.

  • Three years’ experience as clinical veterinarian in a large animal research program.

  • Diplomate, American College of Laboratory Animal Care (DACLAM)and board-certified veterinarian with surgical experience.

  • Experience in protocol review and participating in semi-annual inspections.

  • Knowledge of regulatory guidelines and policies (e.g. AWA, OLAW).

  • Additional experience may substitute for education to the extent permitted the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Expertise working with traditional, large research animals (e.g. pigs, rabbits, nonhuman primates) and nontraditional species (e.g. fish, amphibians and reptiles) are preferred.

  • Experience as Attending Veterinarian (AV) and/or Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) Chairperson is preferred. Experience as an Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) site visitor a plus.

  • Certified Professional in IACUC Administration (CPIA) preferred.

Starting Salary Range: $97,200 - $170,200 Annually (Commensurate with experience)
