Baldwinsville Central School District Maintenance Crew Leader in Baldwinsville, New York

Job Summary: As a Maintenance Crew Leader, you will primarily be involved in the hands-on day to day maintenance and repair operations for public buildings and grounds. Your role involves repair duties and diagnosing complex issues, executing high-standard repairs, and ensuring the efficient operation of critical systems. Additionally, you will oversee a small, skilled crew of Maintenance Worker II staff. This position requires advanced technical expertise, robust diagnostic skills, and a deep understanding of various mechanical and electrical systems. You will be responsible for both the hands-on aspects of maintenance and administrative duties focusing on maximizing efficiency and cost-effectiveness while maintaining high safety and operational standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Technical Skills:

    • Engage in maintenance and repair of intricate systems including heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), electrical, and plumbing systems.
  • Supervise and direct employees engaged in the maintenance and repair of intricate systems including heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), electrical, and plumbing systems. Ensure all work adheres to industry standards and regulatory requirements.

  • Apply advanced technical knowledge to troubleshoot and diagnose complex issues in public building systems, ensuring accurate and timely repairs.

  • Conduct thorough follow-up inspections of HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems to identify potential faults and inefficiencies. Suggest corrective measures to optimize system performance and safety.

  • Project Management:

  • Assist with and oversee maintenance projects from initiation to completion, ensuring projects are executed within budget, on time, and to the required quality standards.

  • Estimate costs, materials, and labor for repairs and maintenance projects to predict and control expenses and resource allocation.

  • Staff Supervision and Development:

  • Lead, train, and evaluate a team of skilled and semi-skilled employees. Foster a collaborative environment that encourages technical excellence and professional growth.

  • Personally ensure that work is distributed based on staff expertise and project requirements. Monitor, assist, and verify performance and provide feedback to ensure high-quality outcomes.

  • Administrative Duties:

  • Maintain comprehensive records related to maintenance activities, project status, and equipment performance. Use these records to generate detailed reports and provide insights for strategic decision-making.

  • Utilize computer systems and maintenance management software for scheduling, tracking, and reporting on maintenance tasks and departmental spending.

  • Be on call for emergency situations with regard to maintenance of buildings and grounds.

    Strategic Planning and Communication:

    • Advise higher management on significant repair needs and maintenance strategies for public buildings. Develop and recommend plans for preventative maintenance and system upgrades.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with team members, supervisors, and external contractors to ensure smooth operation and coordination of maintenance activities.

    Full Performance Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Personal Characteristics:

  • Technical Expertise:

  • Extensive knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of HVAC systems, including understanding of modern control systems and energy management practices.

  • Proficient in the principles, practices, terminology, and tools used across carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and heating trades. The ability to apply this knowledge to complex repair scenarios.

  • Diagnostic and Analytical Skills:

  • Strong ability to diagnose and resolve technical issues with a methodical approach. Demonstrated experience in utilizing diagnostic tools and techniques to assess and rectify system malfunctions.

  • Project and Staff Management:

  • Proven ability to manage and supervise a diverse maintenance team, including scheduling and coordinating resources efficiently. Demonstrated competence in estimating project costs and managing budgets effectively.

  • Communication and Instruction:

  • Ability to follow and convey oral and written instructions clearly and accurately. Skillful in preparing reports, maintaining records, and communicating technical information to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Personal Attributes:

  • Strong leadership skills, with a focus on fostering a team-oriented environment as a working supervisor. High level of organizational skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety and quality standards.

Job Qualifications

The position is governed by Onondaga County Civil Service and candidates must hold the title of Maintenance Crew Leader and/or be eligible to take and be appointed from the Civil Service List when posted.

  • Relevant technical certifications or equivalent experience in HVAC, electrical, plumbing, or related fields.

  • Previous supervisory experience in a maintenance or facilities management role preferred.

  • Proficiency in computer applications and maintenance management software.

AND

Promotion:

Two (2) years of non-competitive class status in the title of Maintenance Worker II or Maintenance Mechanic; or,

Four (4) years of non-competitive class status in the title of Maintenance Worker I.

Open Competitive :

Six (6) years of skilled work in either plumbing, electrical, carpentry work, or HVAC.
