Amazon Sr. Technical Program Manager - FO, Fulfillment Optimization in Austin, Texas

Description

The Fulfillment Optimization (FO) team is responsible to develop and support technologies that enable the optimal use of Amazon and subsidiary transportation, operations, and delivery networks. We believe that through investment in new transportation, operations, and delivery technologies, we will consistently improve internal and external customer experience, and increase confidence and trust in Amazon as the single, best option to get what you want when you want it.

As a Senior Technical Program Manager for FO, you will identify opportunities to achieve business goals taken up by SCOT/FO by establishing a roadmap of projects and guide teams across organizations towards the goal.

You will partner with our Product Managers to identify opportunities and quantify them, and work with Software Development Managers to capitalize on these opportunities. You will closely partner with research scientists, engineers, business stakeholders, and peers to design, develop, test and deploy software that supports our quickly evolving and growing network.

This role is a highly visible and critical position within Amazon with significant customer impact. A successful candidate will have technical background in operations research, mathematics or computer science, tried and tested project management skills, great communication skills and a motivation to achieve results in a fast paced environment through scalable mechanisms, creating auditable records, and guiding teams through challenges.

Key job responsibilities

In this role, you will :

  • Execute efficient and accurate analysis of business requirements associated with goals stated by S-team leadership (VP and above). Document technical requirements spanning all affected systems in a manner sufficient for technical teams to document.

  • Develop and maintain realistic schedules allowing the teams to perform agile design, development, testing, and execute frictionless production launch. Ensure there is continuous buy-in and commitment from all participating teams, and that internal slowdowns, incidents, and other impactful events are communicated in a timely fashion.

  • Negotiate with product and engineering teams to align funding and scheduling of the associated technical work to fit the timeline. Build a staffing schedule, propose and secure temporary funding if needed. Align the milestones of the schedule with schedules that teams participating in the program can commit to. Modify the timeline as necessary.

  • Proactively monitor and interview team leaders for risks and handle changes early. Create proposals to work around limitations, negotiate the final schedule with program owners, including up to S-team leadership.

  • Ensure the final technical designs and breakdowns of technical work meets the business requirements. Dive deep and audit the proposed technical work, partner with SDMs to eliminate unnecessary work and minimize the systems affected by the program. Evaluate the system interfaces and ensure durable and extensible contracts between participating domain services. Monitor, document, and narrate technical execution – proactively identify blockers, escalate as necessary and negotiate completion of relevant work to de-risk the program.

  • Create mechanisms for recurring schedule check-ins. Determine and surface risks, and secure committed mitigation strategies. Cast a broad net to ensure that milestone rollouts are not conflicting with parallel programs. Serve as first point of contact to external program stakeholders, provide timely and proactive updates, and create compelling and accurate narratives describing what is being built, when, for what reason, and with what expected outcomes. Maintain documentation and momentum. Answer high level technical questions about business requirements or integration requirements from internal or external stakeholders.

  • Maintain the ownership and agency in the primary team that the TPM is reporting into. Participate in regular planning, budgeting, and business/technical review ceremonies. Assist the team with high-volume event preparation and coordinated technical programs such as Tech Survey, Monthly Technical Review, and Infrastructure Market Rate management workstreams. Provide peer review to technical strategy documents, peer performance feedback, and suggestions to resolve organizational problems that lead to program execution slowdowns.
