GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Performs complex (journey-level) food preparation work. Work involves preparing, seasoning, and cooking food, and maintaining inventories and records of food consumption. May provide guidance to others. Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use if initiative and independent judgement. ESSENTIAL DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Assists with preparing, seasoning, and cooking food according to menus, special dietary or nutritional restrictions, or established standards. 2. Inspects food preparation equipment, kitchen appliances, and work areas to ensure sanitary conditions meet compliance with health standards and continuous service needed. 3. Perform prepping tasks, mixing cleaning and sanitizing chemicals and other related aspects to prepare dish washing machines for operation. Assists in obtaining and transporting cleaning supplies. 4. Assists in reviewing and planning menus to determine types and quantities of food to be prepared. 5. Ensures that food is maintained at proper serving temperatures. 6. Sets up serving lines and serves food. 7. Reports kitchen equipment in need of repair or replacement. 8. Assists with maintaining an inventory of supplies and prepares requisitions for needed items. Assists with unloading and stocking bulk food products when delivered. 9. Prepares dining area by cleaning tables, utensils, cleaning and serving equipment, dispensers, and all other tasks required for food service activities. 10. Assists in testing and standardizing recipes. 11. Participates with other assigned employees in accomplishing standard and special tasks required to keep the food service area sanitized. Collets and transports trash and other waste materials. 12. May provide guidance to others, as well as assist in making recommendations for improving cooking and kitchen operations. 13. Attend work regularly and observe approved work hours in accordance with agency leave and attendance policies. 14. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications: GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS and REQUIREMENTS: Education Graduation from a standard High School Diploma or equivalent. Experience Minimum of two (2) years experience in food preparation, cooking and baking, and in the use and care of food preparation appliances and equipment. Working knowledge of quantity food preparation techniques and procedures, and of modified and calculated diet preparation methods. Ability to interpret and follow recipes, to analyze problems and recommend solutions, and to provide guidance to others.Substitution Note: Additional work experience of the type described or other related ducation may be substituted for one another on a year-for-year basis. Licensure and/or Certification If driving is required, must possess a valid driver license from state of residence. Regulatory Knowledge Working knowledge of, or the ability to rapidly assimilate information related to TXDPS, State and Federal regulations, legislation, guidelines, policies and procedures. Interpersonal Skills Must demonstrate an ability to exercise poise, tact, diplomacy and an ability to establish and maintain positive, working/professional relationships with internal/external customers. Technology (computers/hardware/software/operating systems) Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook), and appropriate levels of proficiency with utilized software and systems and be able to learn new software/systems. A DPS employee who is selected for a position in their current salary group with a new state title may receive an increase of no more than 3.4% over their current salary regardless of posted salary.
