Laboratory Safety Officer - Maine CDC in Augusta, ME

The Laboratory Safety Officer position is necessary for developing, implementing, and maintaining a comprehensive health and safety program for the Health and Environmental Testing Laboratory (HETL). This position will also satisfy the Department of Labor mandated role of Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO). The Health and Safety Program will include the identification and assessment of potential physical, chemical, biological, and radiological hazards and the selection and implementation of appropriate measures to prevent or control these hazards, including appropriate waste management. The Laboratory Safety Officer will be responsible for staff education/training on health and safety measures and for complying with relevant health and safety regulations. The Laboratory Safety Officer will chair the HETL Safety Committee and conduct periodic safety and health audits across the HETL facility. The Laboratory Safety Officer will update the safety and health policies, processes, and procedures as indicated. This position will be responsible for promoting a culture of safety and reporting of actual and potential safety issues which may place staff and others at risk; assessing those risks; implementing redundant systems to keep risks to the absolute minimum; oversight of site-specific workplace safety policies and procedures; and maintaining a safety plan that meets agency and OSHA requirements.

Specific qualifications needed to perform the job including, necessary licenses, knowledge, skills, education, experience, training, and technical skills.

Understanding of best laboratory practices for minimizing health and safety risks to employees and others.

Excellent understanding of chemistry.

Expertise and knowledge of scientific and technical components of laboratory testing.

Excellent understanding of regulatory requirements.

Ability to communicate through formal written procedures and oral communication tailored to target audiences.

Ability to apply emergency and risk communication principles and techniques to accurately explain information to others.

Ability to mitigate emergency events, coordinating with public safety, Maine DOL, DEP, EPA, etc.

Ability to respond to emergency events, including rare off-hour events.

Excellent ethical standards.

Willingness to continue education and training related to safety and to obtain the CHO certification

Education and Experience Requirements:

• At a minimum, a bachelor’s degree in chemical, physical, industrial hygiene, environmental, or health and safety sciences

• At least four years of experience within a laboratory or chemical-related facility with responsibilities for safety

• Comprehensive knowledge of laboratory operations and practices

• Ability to establish working relationships with diverse groups

• Must pass appropriate background checks

• Related certification (safety related) is preferred

  1. Duties and Deliverable (Outline of specific job duties)

Specific duties required of the resource, as well as any expected deliverables, including necessary travel expectations.

Provide consultive, professional, advice and expertise to the Associate Director of the Health and Environmental Testing laboratory and Maine CDC Chief Safety Officer.

Develop comprehensive safety policies, processes, and procedures as part of the HETL safety program.

Be the subject matter expert (SME) for HETL in all matters related to worker safety and health and chemical hygiene safety.

Exercise independent judgement in recommending and implementing policy and protocol development.

Evaluate laboratory for physical, chemical, biological, and radiological hazards and identify hazards to determine appropriate mitigation measures within the hierarchy of controls.

Make determinations of types and frequency of safety training.

Make decisions regarding the chemical hygiene plan.

Make decisions about work stoppage or work-arounds based on safety considerations and in consultation with the HETL AD, Maine CDC Chief Safety Officer, and Human Resources as appropriate.

Make determinations of chemical and biological storage, use, and appropriate waste streams.

Make determinations of safe work practices to control hazards.

Make determinations about scheduled and unscheduled internal audits to review actual practices within the facility.

Make determinations of appropriate systems to track hazards, near-miss incidents, and injuries to HETL staff, DHHS staff, vendors, and visitors within the facility.

Make determinations for decontamination practices to be used in case of an event.

Make determinations of best practices to align with all regulatory requirements.

  1. Schedule

Summary of work schedule, including normal working hours, on-call expectations, allowed time off (which is non-billable), ability to work remote.

The work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8 to 4:30, on site at 47 Independence Drive, Augusta

Compensation for roles at Staffing Solutions Organization LLC (SSO) varies depending on a wide array of factors including, but not limited to, the specific office location, role, skill set, and level of experience. As required by applicable law, SSO provides a reasonable range of compensation for this role. In addition, SSO provides a range of benefits for this role.
