Switchgear Technician (ETIII)

General Info:

Job Type: Full-Time

Location: Four Seasons Environmental, Inc. – CDC Campus, Atlanta, Georgia

Pay: $36.06/hr. plus an additional fringe benefit of $10.01/hr. ($7.51 H&W/$2.50 401(k) contribution)

Hours: 7:00 am to 3:30 pm (Monday to Friday - 8/hr. shifts): Must be available for emergency on-call duty and if called respond to customer emergencies in a timely manner

*Shift Differential: 4% (2nd shift) or 6% (3rd shift) differential pay only if the majority of hours worked fall within the shift differential window

License/and or Certification:

    Job Description:

    Under general supervision, the Switchgear Technician performs a variety of complex assignments including maintenance, repair and installation of electrical equipment up to 12,000 volts. Electrical work may be performed on controls, motors, transformers, variable frequency drives, batteries and generators. Specifically, performing predictive, preventative, and corrective maintenance on assigned equipment; isolating power, locating and troubleshooting problems and making necessary repairs; restoring power and checking equipment for proper operation; performing complex electrical circuit installation for additions or modifications; pulling wire and wiring in circuit as shown on blueprints; testing systems for proper installation; maintaining and repairing equipment at pump stations and plant facilities such as motors, vent fans, sump pumps, lighting systems, switchgears and uninterrupted power supply systems.

This individual will also be responsible for recording data in the Integrated Facilities Management Software (IFMS), regarding equipment including voltage and amp readings, and date and type of work performed. Other duties include responding to inquiries and resolving complaints in a courteous, efficient, and timely manner; estimating time, materials, and equipment required for jobs; contacting other departments involved in the maintenance or repair of equipment; driving FSE and Government vehicles; and performing related duties as required.

Other duties per job classification is as follows:

  • Inspect, test, troubleshoot, perform start-up and collect data of low, medium and high voltage (to 12KV) electrical systems, MCC’s, Breakers and moderately complex relay calibration and power metering.

  • Test and calibrate electro-mechanical and solid-state relays.

  • Low, Medium and High voltage switchgear and circuit breaker testing.

  • Perform inspection, maintenance, testing and repair of transformers and all related equipment – 45 KVA to 130 MVA, dry type and oil filled.

  • Perform maintenance, testing, reconditioning and repair on circuit breakers – low voltage 480 volt (molded case and air-magnetic).

  • Perform maintenance, testing, reconditioning and repair on circuit breakers – medium voltage up to 15 KV (air-magnetic and vacuum).

  • Test and inspect low and medium voltage cable installations.

  • Perform start-up, troubleshooting and repair services on generator controls and transfer schemes.

  • All work and decisions shall be conducted in strict compliance of all regulatory laws.

    Qualifications and Requirements:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D., supplemented by specialized training or coursework such as relevant trade school in electrical technology or a related field; AND

  • Graduate of Electrical Technical School or Military. Prefer an Associate’s degree from an accredited 2 year technical college in Electrical Power, or similar experience and training from the military (Army, Air Force, or NAVY)

  • Three (3) years of experience maintaining, repairing, and installing electrical equipment at a level comparable to a Switchgear Technician with FSE.

  • Knowledge and experience with switchgear automatic transfer schemes, to include paralleling generator transfer schemes.

    Abilities/Skills/Knowledge Required by Position:

  • Knowledge of various industry standards such as: NETA, NEC, OSHA and NFPA.

  • Must have at least 5 years of relevant experience

  • Prefer experience with most of the following or similar: MCC’s, Breakers, relay testing, oil testing, infrared scanning, performing start-up on switchgear up through 500kV class, etc.

  • Must be able to work safely and adhere to all electrical safety procedures.

  • Good theoretical understanding of electricity and a good aptitude for problem solving.

  • Effectively communicate verbally and in writing with customers and peers.

  • Dependable and responsible with good judgment and organizational skills.

  • Good customer service, time management and follow-up skills.

  • Work effectively with customers, peers and management to resolve client issues.

  • Strong computer skills with working knowledge of Windows and Microsoft Office- use of Internet for standards/products/manufacturer research.
