This position will assist the engineering efforts for product development (NPD) projects for both new and existing products. A Design Engineer will champion the transformation of design concepts into functional and manufacturable products during Newell's Product Development processes using engineering design, prototyping, product validation, and testing. This role is responsible for engineering products to meet cost, timing, and specifications laid out by Newell. A Design Engineer will work effectively with other disciplines including Marketing, Industrial Design, Manufacturing, Quality and Supply Chain.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develop concepts to be fabricated into working prototypes utilizing rapid prototyping techniques for testing with the intent of mass production.
Develop product drawings and part specifications that execute on the design and functionality requirements.
Participates in both creative and technical brainstorms across disciplines to achieve design target
Provides direction for material selection, design perimeters and ease of manufacturing.
Be innovation focused and deliver concepts that can lead to new product ideas and patentable features on the critical path.
Demonstrates the capability to understand consumer needs and translating them into technical specifications.
Deliver 3D and 2D engineering data to ensure products are executed correctly to the design intent, verified with tolerance stacks and simulations.
Implements existing technologies as needed on a category level to meet business objectives with an emphasis on electro-mechanical power transmission and motion control.
Encourages category Profit & Loss (P&L) and key drivers that affect overall program financial health to ensure projects meet established objectives (e.g., margins, costs, revenue, etc.).
Implements engineering solutions, working autonomously or as lead engineer on a project team with minimal guidance to deliver fully engineered products and solutions.
Reviews project proposal cross-functionally to determine technical project specifications.
Develops and maintains timing and action plans for projects of large scope with guidance from senior Project Managers to ensure projects are delivered on time, cost, and quality.
Oversees the performance of the technical team informally to ensure product deliverables are met.
Demonstrates an expert level of understanding of manufacturing processes and technologies to produce a product, and to influence technology choices.
Acts as the company’s subject matter expert (SME) to deliver creative solutions to business-critical challenges and roadblocks.
Researches and recommends emerging and disruptive technologies on a project level to maintain relevant industry knowledge.
Recommends new ideation submissions to Intellectual Property (IP) counsel to build defensible competitive advantage.
Interprets complex technical concepts in simple, clear language appropriate to the audience to gain cross-functional alignment.
Negotiates with development and delivery organizations to balance the needs of NPD, productivity, and product derivatives and ensure the best business outcomes.
Identifies specifications that satisfy unmet consumer and market insights to drive innovation and project execution.
Implements an advanced understanding of product specifications, material selection, manufacturing processes, cost constraints, and regulatory and legal landscape IP to drive high quality, sustainable, and efficient NPD.
Recommends the architecture and product design approach for an entire platform to ensure design consistency.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
10+ years of product design/development experience
Demonstrate experience in 3D CAD modeling (Creo preferred ), part and assembly models
Experience with electro-mechanical power transmission and motion control is a plus
Knowledge of electronics and how to integrate them into a design is a plus
Demonstrates a proven track record of driving successful launches of durable consumer goods (on-time, on-cost, on-budget, and on-specification)
Demonstrates expert problem solver skills with evidence of systematic approach for identifying problems, root-cause analysis, and implementing the “fix”
Demonstrates experience in intellectual property and the patent process
Demonstrates effective planning/organizational skills with a ability to multi-task and set priorities
Demonstrates experience leading projects with domestic and global suppliers
Demonstrates strong prototyping/design validation model building skills
Demonstrates in-depth knowledge of relevant manufacturing processes
Demonstrates excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
Demonstrates proficient computer skills (Excel, Word, Outlook, Project, and PowerPoint)
